Job Purpose:

The position is responsible for the preparation and filing of income tax returns for estates, trusts, registered products & individuals. This all takes place in a work environment that is highly regulated, technically complex, subject to daily tax filing deadlines and continually changing federal and provincial tax legislation

 

Key Accountabilities:

1. Perform key tax preparation functions and support local/regional Scotia Wealth partners by:

  •  Calculating, withholding and remitting non-resident tax, payroll source deductions and personal and corporate tax instalments on a national basis;
  •  Preparing Federal T3 and Quebec TP646 trust tax returns for post-death, post-exempt period Scotiabank registered products;
  •  Preparing and filing of T1, Terminal T1, T3, T3010, T2 and associated provincial tax returns for individuals, estates, trusts, and corporations;
  •  Preparing the T4, T4A, T5, non-resident NR4 and the associated provincial, tax returns, supplementaries and summaries;
  •  Proactively assist in pursuing new business targets.

2. Provide tax solutions and strategies to advisors and their clients by:

  •  Proactively recognizing tax issues as they affect the client’s situations and ensuring that advisors are made aware and, in some cases, communicating the issues directly to clients;
  •  Discussing tax rules and tax elections with the Manager, Taxation, Tax Officer, Associate Tax Officer;
  •  Performing detailed analysis, undertaking research, and assessing tax situations and providing recommendations around specific courses of action in less complex situations.

3. Contribute to the effective functioning of the Taxation Service team by:

  •  Participating actively in team learning development activities and team performance achievements
  •  Building effective working relationships across the team and with various business line and corporate function contacts •Maintaining a high level of professionalism and client service excellence
  •  Facilitating a culture of open and honest communication
  •  Actively participating and contributing to touch bases and team meetings
  •  Encouraging the generation of new ideas and approaches
  •  Actively share knowledge, experience and responsibility to enhance the development of all team members
  •  Developing and executing a meaningful employee development plan •Assist with special projects as they arise from time-to-time

 

Functional Competencies:

  •  Strong analytical skills
  •  Ability to deal with complex issues using strong judgment and problem solving skills to meet very tight deadlines as well as manage several projects at a time
  •  Communication skills, both verbal and written, as well as interpersonal skills must be very strong
  •  Some understanding of the Federal and Provincial income tax rules with a strong ability to interpret the legislation as it relates to estates and trusts and individuals, including current Canada Revenue Agency policies and estate planning concepts
  •  Some knowledge of the operations of trusts and applicable laws including Excise, CPP, EI and Family Law
  •  Ability to analyze and interpret trust & legal documents to identify tax issues
  •  Some understanding of the regulatory environment for trust companies

 

Experience/Education:

  •  Experience may include previous employment within a tax unit servicing individuals and trusts
  •  Post-secondary degree or diploma
  •  Willingness to complete the STEP or CSI Taxation Courses and keep up-to-date with respect to legislative changes, particularly the frequent changes to the taxation of individuals, estates, trusts and registered charities
  •  Excellent computer skills are required, particularly in the use of tax preparation programs and MS Office, Salesforce and the Broadridge Trust System
  •  May be working towards an accounting designation (CPA)
