Vice President, Unsecured Lending, Retail Risk, Global Risk Management
Purpose
Provides strategic direction, leadership and oversight for Unsecured Retail Risk Portfolio Management & Credit Strategies across the lifecycle including day-to-day chequeing and savings, ensuring business strategies, plans and initiatives are supported in compliance with governing regulations, internal policies and procedures.
Accountabilities
- Oversees end to end portfolio management in the Unsecured Lending portfolios across Canadian Banking (Cards, Lines of Credit, Overdraft & SPL Loans) accountable to deliver annual credit loss targets within plan and appetite
- Total assets under management $25Bn, with significant credit exposures and dedication needed to maintain credit losses within appetite. These portfolios are relatively higher risk than Secured portfolios and require specialized lending and technical skills.
- Owns the design and delivery of portfolio management activities across both the unsecured lending portfolios using Industry-leading technologies (TSYS, TRIAD)
- Leads a customer-focused culture throughout their team to deepen client relationships and leverage broader Bank relationships, systems and knowledge.
- Leads risk team to build data driven risk treatments and strategies within appetite that support Banking’s external partnerships and loyalty program requirements, including where needed, participation in M&A assessments
- Creates segment-specific Unsecured Lending programs in support of enterprise strategy e.g., Private Banking, Start Right, Insurance
- Acts as a key liaison to the Banks’ Retail Unsecured Lending, Payments teams, to ensure continued protection from emerging risks, driving open banking readiness, embracing agile technology and big data.
- Elevates the brand, brings industry expertise and responsiveness of GRM as a control function partner in a dynamic unsecured lending environment. Builds a best in class, specialized team of risk professionals.
- Provides a direct contribution to the credit quality of the Bank by establishing, executing, monitoring and testing strategies and policies for origination and account management
- Participate in Canadian Retail Senior Credit Committees and local retail credit committees with Business Executives.
- Provide leadership and key oversight on the evaluation and decisions made on credit score and policy changes across the credit life cycle (adjudication, customer management) with a focus on independent analysis of the risk-return trade-off given the credit risk profile of each proposal
- Contribute to defining the credit risk appetite for all main product groups and facilitate reporting and analysis that ensure the portfolios are performing with acceptable risk measures. Proactively and systematically screen the retail portfolios and markets for emerging and long run trends which require action – develop and implement plans to adjust risk-taking or mitigating as required. Monitor and report on key macroeconomic and portfolio indicators, recommending changes to Executive via Senior Credit Committee, in consultation with key internal stakeholders.
- Direct the due diligence process for credit mergers/portfolio acquisitions to assess credit quality of existing portfolio. Identify potential issues related to adjudication, portfolio quality, and integration requirements.

- Collaborate with Risk colleagues on other teams to develop and implement models, policies, and processes.
- Directs day-to-day activities in a manner consistent with the Bank’s risk culture and the relevant risk appetite statement and limits. Communicates the Bank’s risk culture and risk appetite statement throughout their teams.
- Creates an environment in which his/her team pursues effective and efficient operations of his/her respective areas, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational risk, regulatory compliance risk, AML/ATF risk and conduct risk, including but not limited to responsibilities under the Operational Risk Management Framework, Regulatory Compliance Risk Management Framework, AML/ATF Global Handbook and the Guidelines for Business Conduct.
- Builds a high-performance environment and implements a people strategy that attracts, retains, develops and motivates their team by fostering an inclusive work environment; communicating vison/values/business strategy and managing succession and development planning for the team.
- Manages the delivery of digital profile management and adaptive controls using the FICO TRIAD platform.
- Directs day-to-day activities in a manner consistent with the Bank’s risk culture and the relevant risk appetite statement and limits. Communicates the Bank’s risk culture and risk appetite statement throughout their teams.
- Leads and drives a customer focused culture throughout their team to deepen client relationships and leverage broader Bank relationships, systems and knowledge.

Education / Experience / Other Information
- Minimum 10-15 years’ experience in Risk Management
- Minimum 10 years’ experience with Cards/Unsecured Lending Products
- Demonstrated leadership competencies, including change management
- Adept at building strategic relationships across the Bank
- Skilled at building high performing analytical teams
- Proficient at driving large initiatives involving complex architecture/quantitative concepts
- Strong executive communications skills (verbal and written)
- Experienced with OSFI regulatory compliance, vendor management and internal controls functions
- Extensive professional network, both internal and external to the Bank
