Purpose
This leadership role unifies all Asset Management middle-office functions under a single mandate, to lead the Investment risk strategy, investment manager oversight, and market data solutions. The Vice President, Investment Risk and Portfolio Analysis is a senior leadership role ensuring accurate, timely, and insightful performance analytics, and for overseeing the identification, measurement, monitoring, and mitigation of investment risks across the firm’s global investment platform. This includes traditional and alternative asset classes, both internally and externally managed strategies.
The role bridges front-office investment teams, risk oversight, and executive leadership – driving performance transparency, fostering risk-aware decision-making, and aligning oversight functions with fiduciary and regulatory obligations in Canada and International jurisdictions.
Accountabilities
Investment Risk Management:
• Assess risk and provide feedback on investment strategies, risk management practices, and portfolio performance.
• Lead investment risk oversight in Canada and internationally through identification, assessment, and mitigation strategies.
• Use a variety of analytical resources to develop new and enhanced risk-return analysis, including risk monitoring, interpreting performance attribution, multi-factor risk models, robust stress testing, benchmarking, and scenario analysis.
• Develop and implement investment risk oversight frameworks, tools, and reporting standards tailored to the regulatory and board reporting requirements in coordination with investment and functional teams in line with best industry practices.
• Act as a subject matter expert, providing input during portfolio management discussions and forums.
• Leverage various risk models and portfolio analytics to perform in-depth analysis of investment mandates, in support of the investment process.
• Review investment proposals brought to the 1832 Investment Committee and provide feedback.
• Identify emerging risks and trends in global markets, providing actionable insights and recommendations.
• Ensure compliance with local and international regulatory requirements, coordinating with legal, compliance, and other key stakeholders.
• Accountable for strategic direction for the oversight of all investment products offered through 1832 Asset Management and its portfolio advisors, with direct accountability to senior management, the 1832 Investment Committee and the Independent Review Committee including:
• Overseeing the management of investment mandates and investment advisory agreements for all products and their portfolio advisors
• Portfolio advisor due diligence regarding hiring/on-boarding and terminations/off-boarding
• Contribute to competitive positioning evaluation among industry peers of all investment products (internal and third-party)
• Investment oversight for International Asset Management for their international/offshore mutual funds, including performance monitoring, portfolio advisor due diligence and reporting as needed
Investment Performance Oversight:
• Responsible for leading the ongoing development and delivery of detailed investment analyses and insight, as well as accurate and timely performance reporting, for both internal and external audiences, collaborating with product, marketing and communications teams to provide key insights from oversight activities, such as regular performance and analysis from both a compliance-to-mandate and product integrity perspective, resulting in reporting for regulatory bodies, Boards, IRC, Investment Committee and select client-facing needs, and Quarterly Performance Analyses.
• Lead a high-performing team responsible for GIPS-compliant performance measurement, attribution, and reporting across public and private markets.
• Develop and enhance multi-asset performance attribution frameworks, including factor-based and ex-post analysis.
• Deliver insights on relative and absolute performance to inform strategic and tactical asset allocation, manager evaluation, and compensation decisions.
Additional Responsibilities:
• Leads and drives a client-driven culture throughout their team to deepen client relationships and leverage broader Bank relationships, systems, and knowledge.
• Directs day-to-day activities in a manner consistent with the Bank’s risk culture and the relevant risk appetite statement and limits. Communicates the Bank’s risk culture and risk appetite statement throughout their teams.
• Creates an environment in which their team pursues effective and efficient operations of their respective areas in accordance with Scotiabank’s Values, its Code of Conduct and the Global Sales Principles, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational, compliance, AML/ATF/sanctions and conduct risk.

Education / Experience
• Post-secondary undergraduate/graduate degree(s) combined with CFA Charter Holder is a requirement.
• Completion of other professional designations are an asset (i.e. MBA, FRM, CIPM).
• 10+ years of relevant experience in the investment management industry.
• In-depth understanding of risk management practices, investment theory, and the portfolio management process.
• Previous experience with investment management software and data sets.
• Understanding of regulatory requirements governing investment activities.
