Purpose
The Vice President, Engineering & Architecture is responsible for the strategic direction, leadership, and oversight for development, governance, ongoing evolution, and engineering functions of the bank’s IT infrastructure, covering all infrastructure, platforms and domains (Network, Compute, Database, Middleware, Mainframe, Back-Up Recovery and Storage) while ensuring business strategies, plans and initiatives are supported in compliance with governing regulations, internal policies, procedures and infrastructure standards and best practices.
Accountabilities
- Leads and drives a customer focused culture throughout their team to deepen client relationships and leverage broader Bank relationships, systems and knowledge.
- Provide strategic oversight for the development, engineering, and maintenance of the bank’s global IT infrastructure. Ensure alignment with BNS Enterprise Architecture directives and industry best practices, while meeting business requirements, SLAs, and global deployment needs.
- Lead a team of infrastructure domain architects responsible for establishing patterns and standards across core infrastructure areas, including hosting, storage, network, data centre, workplace collaboration (supporting role), cloud, monitoring, and automation.
- Oversee engineering functions for the bank’s infrastructure platforms and provide support for enduser computing domains (with EUC engineering residing within EUS).
- Serve as a key contributor within the bank-wide technology architecture community, collaborating closely with Enterprise Architecture, technology partners, and business stakeholders to ensure infrastructure strategies, designs, and roadmaps advance technology standards and business objectives.
- Actively engage with technology leaders across financial services and other sectors to share best practices, exchange insights, and remain current on industry trends. Serve as an expert spokesperson—where appropriate and approved—on BNS’s technology direction.
- Accountable for meeting annual budget targets and partnering with business stakeholders to achieve business-level objectives. Proactively identify and champion opportunities for cost optimization, operational efficiency, and modernization across the technology landscape.
- Directs day-to-day activities in a manner consistent with the Bank’s risk culture and the relevant risk appetite statement and limits. Communicates the Bank’s risk culture and risk appetite statement throughout their teams.
- Creates an environment in which his/her team pursues effective and efficient operations of his/her respective areas in accordance with Scotiabank’s Values, its Code of Conduct and the Global Sales Principles, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational, compliance, AML/ATF/sanctions and conduct risk.
- Builds a high performance environment and implements a people strategy that attracts, retains, develops and motivates their team by fostering an inclusive work environment and using a coaching mindset and behaviours; communicating vison/values/business strategy; and, managing succession and development planning for the team.
Education & Experience
- Experience as a key technical partner in global technology transformation efforts, demonstrating the ability to inspire and align diverse technologists, drive efficient and effective decision-making, and to deliver and support a robust infrastructure technology governance framework.
- Deep and broad knowledge of enterprise technologies is expected. Specific strong knowledge and experience with common hosting, storage and networking technologies, as well as cloud, is required.
