Purpose 

The Vice President, Data Solutions Engineering is the senior executive responsible for leading, scaling, and governing enterprise‑grade data engineering capabilities across all Lines of Business (LOBs). This role consolidates all LOB‑aligned data engineering teams under one unified leadership structure, enabling standardized delivery, reusable frameworks, and enterprise‑wide acceleration of data solutions that power analytics, digital transformation, regulatory compliance, and AI innovation.

The VP sets strategy, elevates engineering discipline, and drives modernization to ensure the bank’s data foundation is reliable, compliant, real‑time, and future‑ready.

Accountabilities

1. Enterprise Data Solutions Strategy

• • Define the multi year strategy for Data Solutions Engineering aligned to the enterprise Data & AI vision.
  • Establish unified engineering standards, reusable patterns, and governing frameworks across ingestion, transformation, quality, lineage, metadata, and consumption.
  • Partner with Data Architecture, Data Management Engineering, Data Platform Engineering, and AI Engineering to enable a cohesive end to end data ecosystem.
    
    

     2. LOB Aligned Engineering Leadership

• • Lead all LOB aligned data engineering teams, ensuring delivery accountability and engineering excellence for each business.
  • Implement a consistent operating model while enabling business specific customization.
  • Oversee intake, prioritization, sequencing, and delivery of all LOB data engineering commitments.
    
    

     3. Modern Data Engineering & Delivery Excellence

• • Drive adoption of modern data engineering practices:
  • Cloud native pipelines (Databricks, Spark, Flink, Kafka)
  • Real time/streaming architectures
  • Lakehouse and microservices patterns
  • Automation (CI/CD, DataOps, DevOps, SRE)
  • Improve velocity and reliability by simplifying processes, reducing dependencies, and eliminating friction across environments.
    
    

     4. Organizational Leadership & Talent Strategy

• • Build, scale, and upskill a world class engineering organization across Canada, U.S., Mexico, and LATAM.
  • Develop deep technical leadership bench strength and succession pipelines.
  • Foster a culture of innovation, accountability, and continuous learning.
    
    

     5. Data Quality, Reliability & Governance

• • Ensure all engineered data meets enterprise standards for quality, lineage, metadata, and regulatory controls.
  • Embed data risk management activities into engineering workflows in partnership with the Data Governance and Data Management teams.
  • Own SLAs and SLOs for data pipelines, ensuring production grade reliability and resiliency.
    
    

     6. Executive Stakeholder Engagement

• • Serve as the primary engineering partner to business CIOs, Chief Data Officers, Product owners, and business executives.
  • Translate strategic business priorities into actionable, scalable engineering roadmaps.
  • Provide transparent reporting, KPIs, and status updates to senior executives.
    
    

     7. Financial & Vendor Management

• • Manage significant engineering budgets across people, cloud infrastructure, tooling, and external partners.
  • Evaluate and govern build vs buy decisions for data tools and accelerators.
  • Drive strategic vendor relationships with cloud providers and data platform partners.
  • Creates an environment in which his/her team pursues effective and efficient operations of his/her respective areas in accordance with Scotiabank’s Values, its Code of Conduct and the Global Sales Principles, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational, compliance, AML/ATF/sanctions and conduct risk. 

Education / Experience / Other Information

• 15+ years in large scale data engineering, data platforms, or software engineering roles.
• Experience leading large global engineering organizations (150+ staff) in complex, regulated environments.
• Mastery of modern data engineering technologies:
  • Spark, Flink, Kafka, Databricks
  • Azure or multi cloud environments
  • Lakehouse architectures, data mesh/data products
• Strong understanding of regulatory data requirements, data risk, and governance frameworks.
• Executive level communication and stakeholder influence capability.
• Proven track record of driving modernization at scale and accelerating time to market.

Working Conditions

• Work in a standard office-based environment; non-standard hours are a common occurrence.
• Occasional travel internationally.
• Considerable level of stress leading engineering teams in multiple countries; managing difference priorities, challenge of dealing with difference core banking systems, implementing common bank-wide control objectives and compliance functions.
