The Mandate
The Vice President, Architecture, Platform Engineering & Systems Reliability Office (The VP), provides strategic, end-to-end leadership for enterprise architecture, platform engineering, and operational reliability across the Global Banking & Markets (GBM) technology landscape. The VP is accountable for defining the future-state architecture, modernizing core platforms, and ensuring technology solutions are scalable, resilient, secure, and aligned with GBM’s business priorities.
The VP will lead the modernization and future state of core technology platforms and capabilities across Global Banking and Markets Technology through continuous improvement in our engineering solutions to ensure effectiveness, improved delivery and maintenance practices.
Accountabilities
- Build strong, collaborative partnerships with senior leaders across GBM, Technology and Risk to influence technology solutions, ensure architectural alignment and accelerate strategic business outcomes
- Provide overall direction, guidance and definition of enterprise and business architecture to support the Global Banking & Markets strategy.
- Develop and oversee a comprehensive Architecture framework that defines principles, standards, and global technology target state reference architectures and patterns for core capabilities to be adopted across the Global banking and Markets Engineering organization
- Ensure architectural decisions support security, regulatory, and compliance requirements while optimizing for performance, reusability, and future scalability
- Accountable for the modernization, scalability, reliability and resilience of GBME core platforms. Identify opportunities to continuously improve GBM’s core platforms and engineering solutions to ensure effectiveness and improved delivery
- Implement modern reliability engineering practices that improve system health, reduce operational risk, and enhance observability, incident response, and proactive failure prevention
- Maintain compliance with operational, regulatory, and security controls while driving continuous improvement and operational excellence
- Maintain business & technology roadmaps that outlines the bank's current and future technology landscape which will help guide decision-making around technology investments, system integration, and modernization efforts.
- Drive proactive risk management across all platform environments, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards, internal controls, and operational risk frameworks.
- Ensure all technology solutions adhere to enterprise architecture, cybersecurity, data privacy, and data residency standards.
- Provide thought leadership on modernization, emerging technologies, and strategic opportunities that position the bank for competitive advantage.
- Champion talent development across Global Banking & Markets and Wealth Technology, creating an environment that attracts, grows, and retains top engineering talent.
- Lead and drive a customer focused culture across the team to deepen client relationships and leverage broader Bank relationships, systems and knowledge.
- Ensure compliance with company technology standards, frameworks and policies regarding solution architecture, security, data privacy and residency.
- Directs day-to-day activities in a manner consistent with the Bank’s risk culture and the relevant risk appetite statement and limits. Communicates the Bank’s risk culture and risk appetite statement throughout their teams.
- Creates an environment in which their team pursues effective and efficient operations of their respective areas in accordance with Scotiabank’s Values, its Code of Conduct and the Global Sales Principles, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational, compliance, AML/ATF/sanctions and conduct risk.
- Builds a high-performance environment and implements a people strategy that attracts, retains, develops and motivates their team by fostering an inclusive work environment and using a coaching mindset and behaviours; communicating vison/values/business strategy; and, managing succession and development planning for the team.
Education & Experience
- University degree in related field or equivalent work experience.
- 10+ years of progressively increasing leadership experience in Technology.
- 5+ years managing strategy, process improvement and global transformations in large organizations, multiple geographies and operating models.
- Progressive experience in enterprise architecture, platform engineering, or large scale systems leadership within a highly regulated environment.
- Deep expertise in modern architecture approaches (e.g., cloud-native, microservices, event-driven, API-led, data-centric architectures).
- Strong understanding of capital markets systems, trade workflows, data architecture, and regulatory requirements (asset is strong but not mandatory).
- Demonstrated success leading modernization initiatives, including cloud migrations, legacy platform transformation, or adoption of vendor-hosted solutions.
- Strong knowledge of SRE principles, operational resilience, observability, and incident management best practices.
- Experience driving global transformation programs with depth in Wealth & Asset Management Operations and Technology across the Investment Management lifecycle including the manufacturing and packaging of solutions across all distribution channel.
- Experience with migrating to cloud based global operating models.
- Strong technical communication skills with a proven ability to understand key business and technical concepts, and present them based on target audience (e.g. Senior Executives, Architects, Developers).
- Technology and Digital experience, with an understanding of AI, Machine Learning, Data Science, with exposure to digital transformation is an asset.
- Executive gravitas with advanced problem solving and communication skills, highly collaborative, a true partner and enabler, strong team player and influencer.
- Innovative mindset; ability to continually challenge the status quo, inspire a shared vision and promote key values driving urgency and execution, to facilitate a client focused culture within labs and business lines.
- Strong understanding of agile principles and scrum team practices and rituals an asset.
- Able to lead teams through a fast-paced environment with priorities that can quickly change and often are in conflict with each other.
- Deep understanding of service-oriented architecture, cloud platform and engineering, security, identity and access management, operating system model, modern data platforms, business intelligence, data mining and visualization tools.
