Vice President, Enterprise Strategy, Global Banking and Markets

 

Purpose

The Scotiabank Strategy group is a central team focused on shaping the Bank’s strategic agenda, considering both enterprise and business / function specific strategic questions and opportunities.  The VP, Enterprise Strategy, GBM will be a key member of this team, leading a high performing team and serving as a strategic advisor to both enterprise leaders and the Global Banking and Markets leadership team. This role is also key to facilitating the strategic planning process, cultivating partnerships across the bank to refresh our strategy and strategic metrics on an annual basis or as needed more frequently. 

The incumbent must have a credible strategy development skillset, strong business acumen, knowledge of the Global Banking and Markets business and environment, and the ability to work effectively with senior stakeholders in the Bank’s executive team and with external stakeholders. The role is expected to provide best-in-class functional and business critical insights to drive the bank’s strategic agenda and perform targeted deep-dives across key strategic priorities, while ensuring the operational capability and practicality to fulfill that agenda.

 

Accountability

Lead the Strategy Development & Planning process:

  • Develop long-term strategy and vision aligned to business outcomes – “connect the dots” across the enterprise to clearly articulate a unified story for Scotiabank.
  • Identify, assess, and recommend key strategic opportunities for the enterprise or specific business/functions to pursue
  • Identify investment themes based on emerging trends, competitive benchmarks and build the case for change (e.g., case for core banking platform replacement, migration to cloud, etc.)
  • Collaborate cross-functionally across the business and corporate function Strategy teams to remove barriers and hit milestones necessary to execute on strategic initiatives resulting in organization growth, profitability and ultimately improving customer experience
  • Provide strategic advice to senior stakeholders
  • Collaborate with GBM to manage the GBM  strategy planning process with the Board and Executive Management, ensuring alignment to the Bank’s strategic process and requirements
  • Lead and drive a customer focused culture, to deepen client relationships leveraging broader Bank partnerships, systems, and knowledge

 

Lead the development design and oversee the implementation of appropriate processes, structures, and metrics to monitor progress in implementing the Bank’s strategy and to support the execution of key initiatives

  • Perform periodic assessment of the relevant Scotiabank organization, strategy, and its positioning with respect to local and global peers - develop a transparent view of challenges and opportunities based on the benchmarking exercise
  • Develop operating principles which help evolve the culture, values and standards of performance, professionalism and operational excellence
  • Manage competitive/ business environment research and benchmarking to determine emerging issues and trends and analyze the impact / implications of those trends on the Bank’s strategic plan
  • Monitoring strategic initiatives to ensure that they are being actively managed

 

Develop & upgrade strategy capabilities across the organization:

  • Develop an organization talent strategy and a multi-year roadmap to enhance team skillset and update talent
  • Partner with the business lines & corporate functions to act as a key source for building talent with holistic strategy capabilities who can transfer to other areas of the Bank.
  • Perform activities in a manner consistent with the Bank’s risk culture
  • Direct day-to-day activities in a manner consistent with the Bank’s risk culture and the relevant risk appetite statement and limits.  Communicate the Bank’s risk culture and risk appetite statement throughout their teams.
  • Create an environment in which his/her team pursues effective and efficient operations of his/her respective areas in accordance with Scotiabank’s Values, its Code of Conduct, and the Global Sales Principles, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational, compliance, AML/ATF/sanctions and conduct risk.
  • Build a high-performance environment and implement a people strategy that attracts, retains, develops and motivates their team by fostering an inclusive work environment and using a coaching mindset and behaviours; communicating vision/values/business strategy; and managing succession and development planning for the team.

 

Dimensions

  • The Vice President, Enterprise Strategy, GBM is responsible for designing, developing and leading high impact strategy work to drive the Bank’s strategy and must work collaboratively with large teams of senior executive(s) and representatives from across the Bank.
  • The position requires advanced strategic thinking and influencing skills to support evolution of strategies and issues and develop buy-in across the Bank, addressing conflicting viewpoints and trade-offs.
  • The incumbent is required to exercise a high degree of independent judgment on very large, complex projects and initiatives spanning numerous functional areas, involving large numbers of resources with diverse skills, leading through both direct and indirect supervision, abilities, backgrounds, and competencies.
  • A high degree of collaboration with and across VP’s both within and outside the function is required
  • Requires frequent interface with executive management, including Group Heads. 

 

Education / Experience / Other Information

  • University Degree in Business or similar discipline, MBA or similar post-graduate education.
  • Minimum 10-15 years of relevant work experience in strategy in the financial services industry and/or from the top-tier strategy consultancies.
  • Prior experience or a deep knowledge of Capital Markets and Investment Banking businesses and products
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and ability to coach a team of professionals.
  • Experience leading complex operational and strategic initiatives.
  • Very strong strategic influencing skills, results orientation, and customer focus.
  • Well-developed knowledge of risk, capital planning and financial modelling.
  • Demonstrated ability to present to executives and communicate with highly technical expertise.
  • Distinctive problem-solving and analysis skills combined with impeccable business judgment.
  • Broad knowledge of banking and emerging propositions in the financial services industry including markets, competitors, global best practices, and risk-management practices.
  • Proven ability to drive and manage change with strong results focus.
  • Excellent written, communication and interpersonal skills.  Materials and presentations are prepared for many audiences including senior management, executive management,  and CEO as well as the Board of Directors.
  • Proficiency in French and/or Spanish is an asset
