Purpose of this role:

As Senior Scrum Master (it is Senior Manager equivalent role in Scotiabank), you will be working in PLATO‘s release team to ensure delivery of software products using Agile Methodology.  You will coordinate development and delivery activities of a complex product or multiple teams and ensure deliverables are of the highest quality, while adhering to defined release, product and architectural standards and methodologies by leveraging an agile scrum team. The primary accountability is the execution of release for shipping software features & guiding team towards agreed release priorities and technical release plans developed by the Leadership Team (Product, Engineering, Agile, Design), including the identification, escalation and removal of release and team impediments.

           

Is this role right for you?

  • You will be managing a complex product team or multiple smaller teams for contributing towards agreed release goals.
  • You will work with various teams (Product, Engineering, Agile, Design, Security and Audit) to identify roadmap/feature dependencies and impediments. You will be accountable for tracking the dependencies and impediments and removing them to enable the team.
  • Regularly communicate with other scrum teams to ensure tactical & strategic Use case alignment and identifies/tracks dependencies between the team.
  • You will collect metrics and share progress towards release objectives by providing timely information i.e. if release plan deviates from agreed release priorities, take a corrective action and escalate if required.
  • You will steer team towards sprint & release goals in the context of current release objectives.
  • You will provide regular, standardized reporting for team performance: velocity, stories completed and release execution status to release team and Senior management,
  • Identify team conflict and partner with Engineering team Managers and Agile Coaches to resolve, escalate them to Leadership Team for support, if necessary.
  • Ensure all relevant documentation and Scotia process are followed to stay compliance with Audit, security, Risk and other regulations (as advised by Senior management).
  • You will build and maintain solid, professional working relationships with peers, engineering teams within PLATO & product team members. Engage stakeholders (e.g. risk, legal, audit) as needed for consultation and counsel throughout the course of the release.
  • Developing and delivering training on ‘Agility‘ & Scrum/Agile concepts and best practices to guide teams towards delivery of release increments.
  • Driving team adherence to the Agile Delivery Framework & facilities sprint planning, reviews, retrospectives, and daily stand-ups. Train team members on Agile concepts of estimation, story breaking, etc.
  • Influence stakeholder and team members towards Agile and assist in transformation journey.
  • Mentor junior scrum Masters/other team members and take additional responsibilities to track/ contribute and facilitate the execution of overall PLATO release and implementation of changes.
  • Work on another ad-hoc request and work assignment like Audit readiness, Security alignment, feeding market teams & other(s) as per team‘s mandate and requirements.
  • Adapts area plans and priorities to meet cascaded operational objectives.  Coach and leads others to Identify and drive business, service, program, and process improvements
  • Requires interaction with an increasingly broad range of stakeholders; coaching beyond own team; removes barriers to team success and manages conflict.
  • May be accountable for planning the end to end design of significant processes as & when required.
  • Takes a holistic focus i.e. ownership through conception, build and release journey or implementation of release plans.
  • Recommends and architects process solutions within area of release planning, monitoring and execution 
  • Orchestrates idea generation and break down complex problem definitions (e.g product stories, scenarios, impediments etc) into manageable components and brainstorm across teams to find solutions.
  • Actively pursues effective and efficient operations of his/her respective areas in accordance with Scotiabank’s Values, its Code of Conduct and the Global Sales Principles, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational, compliance, AML/ATF/sanctions and conduct risk.

 

Do you have the skills that will enable you to succeed in this role?

  • 5+ years' of experience as Scrum Master in managing & delivering of complex software projects & products.
  • Around 8 to 10 years of business industry work experience in IT or related fields.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills to rapidly assess problem situations
  • Deep knowledge (bordering on obsession) of Agile principles and the flexibility to adapt your experience to new and evolving environments
  • Experience with large scale software delivery and/or Agile transformation at scale in large enterprise organizations
  • Strong working knowledge and deep experience using JIRA & confluence.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate on a broad spectrum (from deep technical discussions to high-level executive vision)
  • Good understanding of Software Development Life Cycle & various methodologies (Agile, Incremental and Iterative, Waterfall, Scrum-ban, Lean)
  • Organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple complex initiatives.
  • You have expert knowledge and understanding project management practices, disciplines, tools, and methodologies
  • You have demonstrated experience in applying agile methodology to delivering IT projects
  • Preferred to have worked in release teams or in modern IT technologies like Data, Cloud, DevOps, Robotics, Machine Learning etc.
