The Sr. Manager, Business Initiatives & Communications is responsible for the development of the overall business strategy for Insurance Canada and builds plans for complex cross-functional initiatives that will enable profitable growth of our customer base, net income and volume growth targets. The incumbent works closely with a diverse range of stakeholders to deliver on the short-term and long-term business objectives.

The role requires strong presentation and communication skills, influencing, leadership, people management, and project management skills. 



Contribute to Insurance Canada’s strategic objectives by:

  • Supporting the SVP, and VPs in Insurance Canada, in the development and execution of short and long-term strategic initiatives and special projects
  • Creating, delivering and executing business cases to support recommendations, aligned with strategic plans
  • Performing and executing competitive market assessments and research to shape the external environment (customer, regulatory, economic, etc.), increase market position and generate customer value
  • Being a strategic thinker who is innovative and creative in transforming information into actionable insights and plans
  • Communicating clearly and purposefully, sharing business and strategic context on an ongoing basis to ensure our stakeholders are continually informed of relevant industry and business developments and our leadership team’s priorities and expectations


Ensuring project timelines are adhered to by keeping the SVP & VPs aware of any red flags concerning the timing or integration process

  • Supporting key initiatives with skills in process excellence, project management, facilitation, problem solving, accelerating transformation and value creation to drive toward required outcomes
  • Surfacing capacity, pacing, resourcing issues and any other red flag issues needing leadership attention
  • Oversees all Insurance Canada strategic communications strategies including executive, employee and corporate communications as well as external communications and social media channel management
  • Applying his/her passion for growth, driving change and identifying areas of improvement across all disciplines and teams within the department and in the field
  • Continuously improving both his/her skill set and of the team’s processes to optimize the strategy development and communication, project management, and stakeholder engagement

Actively engage with key stakeholders, representing Insurance Canada objectives by:

  • Developing strong relationships with stakeholders at peer and Sr. Management levels
  • Being someone who can advise and shape strategy by influencing with and without authority
  • Working to proactively engage business lines and product groups in enhancing capabilities and strategies within Insurance Canada/Global Insurance and enterprise-wide
  • Collaborating with various other internal or external teams across the Bank to deliver on key objectives as required

Develop team capability and manage team initiatives by:

  • Providing day to day management of his/her direct reports ensuring team goal alignment
  • Providing employee development opportunities for his/her direct reports
  • Ensuring appropriate communication, coaching, delegation and support are provided to his/her team member to effectively optimize productivity, engagement and long-term development plans
  • Continuously acquire and enhance knowledge of one self’s business/product knowledge, competitive practices, and market insights
  • Build a high-performance environment and implement a people strategy that attracts, retains, develops and motivates their team by fostering an inclusive work environment; communicating vison/values/business strategy and managing succession and development planning for the team.

Complexity of Position and Functional Competencies/Qualifications Required:

  • Insurance Canada is a large contributor to Canadian Banking, generating significant NIAT
  • Being able to thrive in ambiguous situations, demonstrating structured thinking/processes to simplify complexity
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills and ability to handle multiple initiatives and prioritize effectively
  • The role requires a high degree of collaboration across wide ranging groups
  • Excellent strategic thinking, organizational, influencing and strong presentation skills are critical for success
  • Strong communication skills essential with clients, vendors and management
  • Ability to prepare and present PowerPoint decks to convey key messages and opportunities
  • Solid understanding of financial statements and P&L levers with the ability to drive sound business decisions based on analytics and reporting
  • Clear understanding of competitive Insurance market place and environment
  • Proficient in the use of all MS Office applications
  • Strong customer focus with ability to identify customer needs and develop solutions that create customer value and profitability for the bank
  • 5+ years related work experience in strategy development and execution and experience with strategic planning, business planning and/or strategy review processes
  • University degree or MBA in business management/administration or commerce preferred
  • Previous product area, business line, or management consulting experience preferred
  • The incumbent possesses knowledge of the Canadian financial services and insurance markets
  • Results oriented, flexible and willing to work in a multi-task and dynamic work environment.
