Purpose

 

Leads and oversees Insurance in Canada ensuring business strategies, plans and initiatives are executed / delivered in compliance with governing regulations, internal policies and procedures.

 

The Sr. Manager, Portfolio Optimization & Advanced Analytics is a senior leader within the Business Analysis and Planning team. The incumbent is accountable for driving the development and optimization of Insurance strategy, overseeing the financials and cost management (P&L) of the Insurance line of business, and delivering scalable business solutions using Advanced Analytics. The incumbent provides leadership and guidance to their team members and recruits talent to build a robust team. The Sr. Manager needs to have a strong understanding of the business to drive value and be highly technical to direct the managers within the Analytics team.

 

Key Accountabilities

 

  • Leads and drives a customer focused culture throughout their team to deepen client relationships and leverage broader Bank relationships, systems and knowledge
  • Produce financial reporting for Insurance line-of-business
  • Reconcile reporting data from multiple sources: BNS systems, insurers, actuarial systems, and vendors
  • Monitor profitability across all lines of business
  • Track premiums, claims and expenses and trends on a monthly basis
  • Monitor claims experience, underwriting and process/policy changes
  • Measure and monitor new products post launch
  • Create and populate Business Case Support asks and produce business case financial pro-formas
  • Manage partnerships between Insurers, stakeholders, vendors, systems to drive analytic capabilities within Insurance Canada
  • In conjunction with Actuarial team, perform cost-benefit analysis and operational tracking of strategic and operational initiatives
  • Responsible for championing development and execution of risk-reward initiatives and enhancements that will drive business mix optimization
  • Accountable for the identification and assessment of business trends, both internally and externally with our competitors to ensure product and program profitability is maximized, competitively positioned, delivered efficiently, and that existing and future customer needs are met
  • Leverage data to create customer journeys and identify value pockets
  • Drive predictive modelling and advanced analytics initiatives to drive growth and presentations that resonate with multiple stakeholders
  • Create new data-driven models to optimize business processes: MSB Illustrator Algorithm – optimize product bundle recommendation logic; Automated underwriting – auto-approve low-risk applications through CLA mortality study; Purchase propensity models
  • Plan and track expenses across all transits
  • Leverage and drive analytical insights to flush out new opportunities to meet client needs and business objectives while analytically assessing the value and impact of new requests
  • Develop and implement thorough quality assurance processes and procedures to ensure strategies implemented are successfully delivered to customers without error
  • Become the subject matter expert on creating a translation of financial metrics to non-financial metrics (i.e. sales, channel performance, retention, persistency etc.)
  • Understand how the Bank’s risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day activities and decisions
  • Creates an environment in which the manager’s team pursues effective and efficient operations of their respective areas in accordance with Scotiabank’s Values, its Code of Conduct and the Global Sales Principles, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational, compliance, AML/ATF/sanctions and conduct risk
  • Builds a high performance environment and implements a people strategy that attracts, retains, develops and motivates their team by fostering an inclusive work environment and using a coaching mindset and behaviours; communicating vison/values/business strategy; and, managing succession and development planning for the team

 

Education and Other Requirements

 

  • Degree in Finance, Actuarial Science or Statistics, Business, or related discipline
  • Financial designation - CA, CMA, CGA, CFA, MBA (Finance, Management Analytics, or Marketing) – preferred
  • 7+ years of experience in Analytics
  • 7+ years of experience in Finance
  • Strong PowerPoint and presentation skills for story-telling
  • Strong financial acumen and understanding of profitability metrics
  • Expert use of MS Office skills, particularly with Excel (building financial models)
  • Strong knowledge of budgeting and forecasting functions, accounting and financial reporting systems
  • Strong communication skills essential with clients, vendors and management
  • Strong prioritizing, planning, analytical, presentation, project management, people management and relationship building skills
  • Previous business line and banking experience is highly desirable
  • Experience with BI Tools (Tableau, Power BI, etc)
  • Work in a standard office-based environment; non-standard hours are a  may occur.  Limited/no travel domestically
