The Senior Manager, Business Banking Risk, Policy & Initiatives, Global Risk Management contributes to the success of credit risk management for the Canadian Retail Business Banking portfolio by developing, implementing and updating sound credit policies, guidelines and procedures. The incumbent will have experience in credit risk management and thorough knowledge of Retail Business Banking credit policies and industry best practices. The incumbent will have the ability to provide meaningful commentary on portfolio and loan level performance and policy recommendations. The position requires the ability to effectively perform in a fast-paced environment, collaborate with cross-functional teams and provide effective challenge to 1st line of defense.

 

Is this role right for you? In this role, you will:

  • Provides expertise and guidance in the development, implementation and oversight of origination and account management policies, guidelines, and processes ensuring risk management policy for Retail Business Banking lending is effective.
  • Contribute to the profitability of the Retail Bank by ensuring Retail Business Banking credit is aligned with the Risk Appetite Framework optimizing risk/return over the long term
  • Review and conduct analysis of existing policy and portfolio trends to identify, promote and lead opportunities to maintain credit quality, improve efficiency and effectiveness of procedures including streamlining, automating, and standardization; recommend changes to enhance performance and overall
  • Customer Experience. Be able to recommend and socialize enhancements to Retail Business Banking
  • Credit Risk Policy based on experience, market changes, portfolio and regulatory landscape.
  • Provide counsel and direction to other units (e.g. Business Line, PAE, ACE, Centralized Processing Units, Banking Operations) regarding risk related policy/procedure/systems
  • Support Business Line initiatives/projects and assess credit risk proposals while providing effective challenge as 2nd line of defense and providing sound recommendations for changes to core policies, regulations and major business initiatives and portfolio level decisions that require GRM’s authorization or advice and counsel. This includes assessment of new programs/products, new pilots or pilot extension or program renewals and following up approval conditions that may be established as part of GRM’s approval
  • Conduct data analysis to validate existing policy parameters and assess impact of changes, investigate exceptions, and provide responses to business line. Ensure timely tracking and monitoring of policy and strategy changes.
  • Within GRM, the incumbent will interact with other teams, including Risk Technology, Portfolio Reporting & Insight, Collection and Governance to ensure effective risk management at portfolio level.
  • Support investigations and solutioning for questions/findings from external regulators and internal Audit in appropriate timeframes.
  • Participate in projects when required. This includes the review of business cases, risk proposals, requirements documents and liaising with the appropriate groups throughout the organization.
  • Where applicable, recruit candidates, provide leadership to and develop direct reports
  • Share knowledge/experience and provide opportunities for staff to share responsibility for achieving bank and department objectives/goals
  • Contribute to the success of the Retail Credit Risk

 

Do you have the skills that will enable you to succeed in this role? - We'd love to work with you if you have: 

  • A business-related university degree is required
  • 5-10 years of relevant work experience
  • Expertise and thorough understanding of credit and portfolio management, specifically Retail Business Banking credit policies, procedures, credit adjudication and regulatory requirements to effectively challenge current practices and proposed changes
  • In-depth understanding of: i) Retail Business Banking products, systems and origination channels, and the markets in which Scotiabank operates; ii) Bank’s credit risk policy and risk appetite framework; iii) Retail Business Banking lending process, applications and credit review policies and processes; and iv) legislative and marketplace issues relative to credit risk management.
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to interpret information/data required to monitor the performance and enhance credit policies
  • Credit Risk related project management experience with the ability to take on, manage, and successfully execute multiple projects of various levels of complexity and urgency
  • Working knowledge of data analysis, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and the ability to effectively convey information to various levels of management.
  • Strong presentation skills and are comfortable presenting materials in various forums and to various levels of staff, management, auditors and regulators
  • Strong financial analysis skills, solid deductive reasoning, sound judgement and creativity.
  • Strong skills in strategic influencing and working collaboratively with cross functional business partners.
  • Highly organized with proven ability to work independently to deliver results in a time-pressured environment
  • Consistently demonstrated propensity to learn with ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment, comfortable with evolving role and wide-ranging responsibilities.
  • People management experience would be an asset.
