Job Purpose:

Contributes to the effectiveness of the AML Program by leading the design and delivery of programs and initiatives intended to monitor evolving AML/ATF and financial crime regulatory trends for their potential impact on policies, standards, and business strategies.  Maintains a proactive awareness of current and emerging industry issues to keep FCRM Leadership apprised of emerging risks and trends. Provides insights into significant enforcement actions against other banks that may be relevant to Scotiabank’s AML Program in light of lessons learned.  Responsible for preparing the Wolfsberg questionnaires for all relevant Scotiabank subsidiaries on an annual basis.


Is this role right for you? In this role, you will:

  • Responsible for continuously monitoring a wide variety of external sources for bulletins, guidance, media articles, etc. of relevance to Scotiabank’s AML Program
  • Prioritizes and reviews material from intelligence sources to prepare timely summaries for AML Leadership
  • Brings to the attention of other FCRM team members any implied impacts to their respective areas of specialization
  • Alerts FCRM Leadership to adverse media which could potentially involve Scotiabank globally (e.g. Panama Papers, FinCEN Files, etc.)
  • Interacts with EVP, Global Head FCRM as well as SVPs with regularity to communicate and assess impacts of emerging industry risks
  • Accountable for preparing quarterly Board reporting on emerging AML risks and trends, including significant industry AML enforcement actions.
  • Accountable for preparing the response for GRM Top and Emerging Risks report for ML/TF risks and coordinating with Global Sanctions & Screening for their input regarding sanctions risks
  • Provides input to training materials for the Board of Directors and Executive Management in terms of key enforcement actions and emerging regulatory trends
  • Through a broad understanding of Scotiabank’s requirements, standards and operations, provides strategic insights and recommends changes to enterprise standards arising from regulatory intelligence
  • Manages a repository of regulatory intelligence artifacts to support subsequent research of key issues and topics
  • Responsible for the design and execution of the communications strategy regarding the distribution of regulatory intelligence beyond FCRM Leadership
  • Responsible for designing and managing the end to end process relating to review and update of the Wolfsberg questionnaires: providing oversight and quality assurance to the Wolfsberg questionnaires for all relevant Scotiabank subsidiaries on an annual basis and providing advice and counsel regarding responses to external queries in regards to enterprise program responses within the Wolfsberg Questionnaire
  • Responsible for the maintenance of the AML & Sanctions compliance web-page on
  • Keeps the AML public statement up to date and ensures its alignment with other public statements on the FCRM Program.  
  • Responsible for coordinating the FCRM relevant responses to industry ESG survey questions regarding anti-crime policies and measures
  • Champions a customer focused culture to deepen client relationships and leverage broader Bank relationships, systems and knowledge
  • Understand how the Bank’s risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day activities and decisions
  • Actively pursues effective and efficient operations of his/her respective areas in accordance with Scotiabank’s Values, its Code of Conduct and the Global Sales Principles, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational, compliance, AML/ATF/sanctions and conduct risk

Do you have the skills that will enable you to succeed in this role? - We'd love to work with you if you have:

  •  A university degree, preferably in a business, risk management, compliance or legal discipline with a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience, preferably covering a broad range of disciplines; including AML/ATF compliance, operations and/or legal or equivalent. In addition,
  • Command a high level knowledge of a wide variety of domestic and international regulatory requirements and, in a constantly changing environment, be capable of digesting, interpreting and communicating often highly complex regulations and supervisory interpretive guidelines that fall within the scope of the position.
  • Knowledge of the financial services industry locally and globally
  • Working knowledge of a global conglomerate bank
  • Expert ability to quickly read, analyze, and synthesize legal and regulatory documents, identifying key issues and inter-related themes.  Ability to relate issues and themes to key concerns of management.
  • Expert ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbal and written, with all levels including senior  and executive management.
  • Be able to listen, understand and negotiate and obtain consensus from senior management when introducing new ideas and policy recommendations for action or change.
