Purpose

Contributes to the oversight of International Wealth in Canada and International Banking ensuring business strategies, plans and initiatives are executed / delivered in compliance with governing regulations, internal policies and procedures.

The position manages key relationships, helping ensure business strategies, plans and initiatives are executed and delivered in accordance with governing regulations the Bank’s business strategies, plans, initiatives, internal policies, standards, procedures, and with Scotiabank’s ethical conduct standards.

 

Accountabilities

  • Support and deploy a customer-focused culture throughout the team to deepen client relationships and leverage broader Bank relationships, systems and knowledge.
  • Plan and coordinate the implementation and maintenance of a Compliance program in the countries within the International Banking region where the Bank has Wealth operations, including Asset Management, Brokerage, Pensions and Trust.
  • Proactive advisor to the business in the abovementioned areas.
  • Support the Director, International Wealth Compliance in developing, monitoring, and regularly updating the business's compliance operations to ensure regulatory risks are managed effectively and efficiently, in alignment with the firm's risk appetite.
  • Develop, support, and contribute to the preparation of presentation decks for monthly Core Risk Committees (International Banking and Global Wealth Management) and the quarterly report of the Chief Compliance Officer to the Board.
  • Attend weekly meetings with direct manager to update on emerging issues, progress of initiatives and trends in the Wealth units under oversight.
  • Understand how the Bank’s risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day activities and decisions.
  • Contribute to create an environment in which the team pursues effective and efficient operations of the respective areas in accordance with Scotiabank’s Values, its Code of Conduct and the Global Sales Principles, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational, compliance, AML/ATF/sanctions and conduct risk.
  • Contribute to build a high-performance environment and implement a people strategy that attracts, retains, develops and motivates the team by fostering an inclusive work environment and using a coaching mindset and behaviours; communicating vision/values/business strategy; and managing succession and development planning for the team.

 

Education/Experience

  • Under-graduate or post-graduate education.
  • Banking and Securities experience.
  • Knowledge of Banking and Securities products and regulation.
  • Highly knowledgeable about the Wealth business activities, products & services and organizational structures.
  • Able to assess difficult compliance and other regulatory issues, exercise sound judgment expeditiously with respect to such issues and defend decisions with management of the business.
  • Able to effectively work with and influence business and other control functions personnel in the business to implement compliance-risk management initiatives
  • Able to communicate effectively and in writing with management of the businesses and local compliance staff.
  • Fluency in Spanish is required.
