Purpose 

 

Contributes to the overall success of Government Affairs by leading Scotiabank’s engagement with key industry associations and supporting the development of public policy positions on global and domestic issues. The role ensures Scotiabank’s interests are effectively represented and integrated into external advocacy initiatives while fostering collaboration on public policy across the Bank. 

 

Is this role right for you? In this role you will:

 

  • Leads engagement with key industry associations, ensuring Scotiabank’s interests are represented effectively. Coordinates policy positions and representation on industry working groups. Tracks consultations at key industry associations and coordinates input into industry-led consultations and advocacy initiatives.  
  • Supports the Director of Government Affairs in developing unified public policy positions on global and domestic issues that reflect input from key internal stakeholders. 
  • Develops consultation responses, briefing notes, and executive updates on emerging global trends. Ensures timely input into priority market consultations on public policy and legislative issues. 
  • Maintains a global policy tracker and shares insights regularly, in coordination with other relevant teams. Leads development of internal mechanisms to gather input 
  • Supports advocacy efforts in Canada, and where needed globally including by preparing materials for senior leadership engagement in Canada and other priority markets. 
  • Identify and pursue thought leadership opportunities through association committees and working groups, Provide input into corporate affairs and external affairs thought leadership as needed. 
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with industry peers and association leadership. Work with the VP, Global Government Affairs and Director, Public Policy and Industry Affairs to identify opportunities to leverage these relationships for business objectives. 
  • Contributes to the effective functioning of the Global Corporate Affairs team by fostering effective working relationships across the function and creating a collaborative culture based on transparency, enterprise-wide thinking, and innovation. 
  • Understand how the Bank’s risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day activities and decisions. Actively pursues effective and efficient operations of his/her respective areas, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational risk, regulatory compliance risk, AML/ATF risk and conduct risk, including but not limited to responsibilities under the Operational Risk Management Framework, Regulatory Compliance Risk Management Framework, AML/ATF Global Handbook and the Guidelines for Business Conduct.

Dimensions 

 

  • The role is based in Toronto. 
  • The role operates under the direction of the Director, Government Affairs.  The incumbent works closely with other members of the Government Affairs team, and other senior executives across business lines, especially the Group Head of Canadian Banking. 
  • The role requires the ability to think and influence strategically in order to integrate public policy considerations into the Bank’s goals and recognize potential issues as a result.  
  • The role must build and leverage strategic relationships both internally and externally with relevant stakeholders. 
  • Primary stakeholders include government (both political and government officials) as well as regulators, industry associations and relevant stakeholders in Canadian provinces and municipalities of interest. 
  • The role requires demonstrated leadership skills, independence and performing highly complex assignments, often pressure and in ambiguous circumstances. 
  • The incumbent must understand public policy and regulatory issues pertaining to the financial services sector.  

 

 

Do you have the skills that will enable you to succeed in this role? We’d love to work with you if you have:

 

  • Minimum 7 years experience (or equivalent) in government affairs  
  • Bilingual (French and English) considered an asset 
  • Ability to provide strong support to multiple and diverse groups 
  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship-building skills  
  • Strong project management skills, ability to work independently, manage a very high level of volume, and meet tight deadlines 
  • Knowledge of the financial services sector or regulated industries is an asset
