Purpose

The Senior Manager, Fund Tax Advisory – as a member of the Scotia Fund Tax Advisory & Oversight team plays a key role in supporting tax projects for the Scotia Global Asset Management (SGAM) group by providing tax support expertise and tax project management. Working with the Director, Fund Tax Advisory & Oversight, the Senior Manager, Fund Tax Advisory will bring tax expertise and project management skills on domestic and global fund tax product initiatives and fund tax technical projects to this tax advisory role.

 

Is this role right for you? In this role you will:

  • Work with the tax advisory-focused team to deepen client relationships and leverage broader Bank relationships, systems and knowledge.
  • Take a key role with the fund tax advisory team in the management of domestic and global fund product development projects.
  • Provide tax technical support on domestic and global fund tax product structuring and development projects, including coordination with external professional tax service providers.
  • Bring experience and knowledge of domestic and global fund product structuring (e.g., LATAM, Cayman, Irish UCIT, Lux umbrella structures, etc.)
  • Work with stakeholders (e.g., SGAM Product and Investment management teams, legal and regulatory colleagues) in resolving tax technical matters arising from various sources (e.g., external tax audits, internal investment team queries, complex securities review, corporate actions review).
  • Take a key role with the fund tax advisory team in the management and resolution of fund tax technical matters brought forward by the fund tax distributions and compliance operational team.
  • Liaise with operational management and external advisors to provide fund tax technical information and/or advice with respect to the various business lines regarding fund distribution/ compliance matters, fund reporting, investor level reporting, global withholding tax positions, fund financial reporting, etc.
  • Contribute to the coordination of resource planning and allocation between the tax directors and senior managers responsible for scheduling and resource utilization within the various fund families.
  • Identify fund tax planning opportunities that may arise from projects encountered.
  • Understand how the Bank’s risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day activities and decisions.

Do you have the skills that will enable you to succeed in this role? We'd love to work with you if you have:

  • Professional designation (example: CPA, JD/LLB) or equivalent experience.
  • CPA Canada In-depth tax course or MTAX or commensurate or demonstrated ability to oversee complex tax planning projects.
  • At least 6 years of experience in a professional organization or funds industry providing tax technical planning/project management in complex contexts.
  • Ability to communicate complex concepts to non-technical executives and others.
  • Ability to negotiate and influence others to ensure change is adopted and effected.
