Purpose

Contributes to the overall success of the Insurance business in Canada ensuring specific individual goals, plans, initiatives are executed / delivered in support of the team’s business strategies and objectives.  Ensures all activities conducted are in compliance with governing regulations, internal policies and procedures.

 

This technical position has primary accountability for needs analysis, design, implementation and ongoing management and usage of the customer and marketing data infrastructure for Life and Health, Home, Auto and Travel insurance products. In addition, participation in development of predictive modelling, data-mining, and advanced statistical marketing analytics for customer needs-analysis, behaviors and engagement.

 

The incumbent is responsible for strategy and implementation of customer database analytics to enable highly targeted delivery of multiple product offers across numerous integrated delivery channels. The position contributes to the design of new products, offers, and customer segments by synthesizing and analyzing customer data and results from database marketing campaigns. These database marketing campaigns provide the sole source of revenue for the business line, as the federal Bank Act currently restricts ScotiaLife from selling certain products in the branch network.

 

This position also designs, implements and maintains operational reporting for regulatory agencies, and implements and analyses operational and customer level reports for new sales and service opportunities.

 

Accountabilities

 

Champions a customer focused culture to deepen client relationships and leverage broader Bank relationships, systems and knowledge.

 

Analyze existing ScotiaLife Data Infrastructure, identify gaps, and design new capabilities and enhancements.

Evaluate opportunities to add new tables and fields to the existing EDW, EDL and EGL

Evaluate opportunities with existing and new third party vendors and the bank’s data warehouse to develop new enhancements and capabilities to the EDW, EDL and EGL.

Determine and document business and technical needs by preparing cost benefit analysis and business cases.

Supervise the implementation of new enhancements to ensure that they are on time and within budget.

Ensure the database enhancements are compliant with federal and provincial legislation (e.g., Bank Act, Privacy Act).

Help translate business needs into detailed technical requirements and implement them.

Use Remote Server Access to manage batch jobs and create new automated jobs to manage the ongoing operational and regulatory needs of the business.

 

Manage usage and ongoing maintenance of new database capabilities.

Negotiate and manage Service Level Agreements.

Supervise transition plans.

Develop and manage SFTP processes

Develop customer list specs.

Develop specs and implement regulatory, operational, customer and policy MIS reporting.

Provide input into the development and reporting of key business metrics by analyzing data from customer and policy databases.

Prepare monthly operational and customer MIS reports for Executive Management Team.

Develop specs and implement Not In Service (NIS) telephone number replacement lists.

Develop specs and implement bringing customer list generation in house from third party vendors.

Oversee work of internal and external suppliers, including building and implementation of predictive marketing models.

 

Analyze customer data to help identify new segments, offers and products in order to improve business case profitability.

Conduct research and analysis of customer data to identify opportunities to innovate existing offers and products.

Support design of new product and offers across multiple marketing channels.

Help improve acquisition, up-sell, cross-sell and retention results through rigorous data analysis.

Explore, developer and execute on predictive modelling use cases.

 

Actively participate in all major Scotiabank and Scotia Insurance data warehouse initiatives that involve customer and policy data.

Represent ScotiaLife when Retail Marketing is designing and developing data warehouse projects.

Monitor industry developments.

Support all ScotiaLife Business Re-engineering Projects that involve management and use of customer and policy data.

 

Understand how the Bank’s risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day activities and decisions.

 

Actively pursues effective and efficient operations of his/her respective areas in accordance with Scotiabank’s Values, its Code of Conduct and the Global Sales Principles, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational, compliance, AML/ATF/sanctions and conduct risk.

Education and Other Requirements

 

  • Degree in Computer Science or Mathematics is essential; post graduate degree would be an asset.
  • Technical: In-depth programming and analysis; 5+ years’ hand’s-on experience, preferably in the financial services industry. Advanced skills in databases and analysis programs in both the UNIX and Windows environment (including, SAS on Windows and UNIX, DB2 on Unix, Unix – AIX, Korn Shell scripting, Hive and Hadoop, and Microsoft Access) and good working knowledge of different data-mining, modeling and profiling techniques.
  • Must have experience with Batch Job Development, processing through Remote Servers, Windows Scheduler program and server management.
  • Experience with SFTP between external vendors, insurers, stakeholders.
  • Professional CRM and SAS certification would be an asset.
  • Experience with BI tools such as Tableau, Power BI

 

  • Business:  Because ScotiaLife is a distinct legal entity, knowledge must span corporate governance, strategic planning, product design and pricing, customer sales and service, systems strategy and implementation, business operations, and risk management.  
  • The incumbent must also have a solid understanding of Insurance and Bank business objectives, strategies and structures, including the regulatory framework. Specific regulatory or compliance knowledge
  • Markets: The incumbent requires a thorough knowledge of Canada’s financial services marketplace and an expert knowledge of the insurance market. The incumbent must have strong knowledge of consumer needs and preferences for life and accident insurance products and services.
