The Role

Contributes to the overall success of the Scotiabank Economics in Canada ensuring specific individual goals, plans, initiatives are executed / delivered in support of the team’s business strategies and objectives.  Ensures all activities conducted are in compliance with governing regulations, internal policies and procedures.

 

This role will be responsible for applying sound macroeconomic analysis to forecasting and analyzing major economies and financial markets with a particular focus upon the US and China with implications for Canada.  General macroeconomic duties will include publishing, presenting and client service related to the broad macroeconomic outlook.  Success in this role requires prior relevant experience, solid academic qualifications, strong critical thinking skills, excellent oral and written communications skills, curiosity, the ability to work independently and as part of a team, and flexibility.

  • Champions a customer focused culture to deepen client relationships and leverage broader Bank relationships, systems and knowledge.
  • Communicate and explain the Economics Department’s analytical work to internal Bank clients, external clients, policymakers, competitors, and the media with a view to enhancing the Economics Department’s standing as a thought leader and valued resource in forward-looking macroeconomics research and analysis.
  • Develop relationships with internal Bank and external clients, and respond to their requests in a prompt and effective manner where they are consistent with the remit of the Economics Department.

 

Apply sound macroeconomics to industry needs:

  • Apply a wide range of tools, experience and judgement to analyze and forecast developments applied to major economies outside of Canada.

 

Communicate insights to diverse audiences:

  • Deliver clear, impactful economic commentary through reports, presentations, and limited media engagements subject to Scotiabank’s desired profile.
  • Prepare thought leadership pieces to strengthen Scotiabank’s brand.

 

Expand Scotiabank Economics' collaborative efforts to bolster Scotiabank’s financial performance and advance its strategic objectives:

  • Drive a customer-focused culture to deepen client relationships and leverage broader Bank relationships, systems and knowledge.
  • Liaise with other departments within the organization, as needed, to develop strategies and provide economic analyses, forecasts, and perspectives to support broader corporate objectives.

 

Champions a high-performance environment and contributes to an inclusive work environment.

  • Collaborate and work as part of the overall economics team to help meet business objectives.
  • Promote the advancement of the department by sharing information, knowledge, best practices, and methodologies
  • Act as coach/mentor to other team members.
  • Understand how the Bank’s risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day activities and decisions.
  • Actively pursues effective and efficient operations of their respective areas in accordance with Scotiabank’s Values, its Code of Conduct and the Global Sales Principles, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational, compliance, AML/ATF/sanctions and conduct risk.

 

Do you have the skills that will enable you to succeed in this role? – We’d love to work with you if you have:

 

  • Graduate degree(s) in Economics. An MBA in Finance and a CFA or accounting designation would be additional assets.5-10 years related experience.
  • Proven track record of economic analysis and/or publication experience.
  • Strong working knowledge of economics, financial markets, and macroeconomic analysis.
  • Solid understanding of the fiscal, monetary, and structural policy landscape and its implications for the economy and financial industry.
  • Demonstrated ability to produce accurate, high-quality work under pressure and within tight deadlines.
  • Excellent English-language written and verbal communication skills, with strong organizational and presentation abilities.
  • Develop client-focused, original research ideas on economics, capital-market and financial system issues. Agree with the primary manager on a research and publication plan that shall be revisited and revised on at least a quarterly basis.
