PURPOSE OF JOB
The Senior Analyst, Global Finance - Subsidiary Financial Accounting and Reporting, is responsible for analyzing information from operation/accounting systems and coordinating with various teams to submit financial statements to the Bank on a monthly and quarterly basis for the legal entity Scotia Capital Inc. (SCI) and other wholly-owned subsidiaries and affiliates. Critical accounting tasks include allocation and validation of expenses, primarily for voice & data communications, technology, premises, and prepaid expenses ensuring the validity and accuracy of the entries posted to various GLs, performing accounting activities related to month-end close and reconciliation of key control accounts.
The Bank’s monthly and quarterly reporting schedule – both for internal and external reporting, is very demanding. Overtime is often required to ensure that all deadlines for period-end deliverables are met.
MAJOR ACCOUNTABILITIES
Perform month-end closing accounting activities and monthly reconciliation of general ledger accounts
- Prepare monthly journal entries and reports to support month-end departmental deadlines
- Maintain and produce monthly reconciliations for various assigned key control accounts
- Complete monthly G/L leadsheet attestation while identifying, investigating and resolving variances as required from Regulatory and Compliance department
Responsible for the maintenance of expense allocations
- Validate invoices received from various departments (Market Data, IT&S Finance, Real Estate, etc.) and allocate the charges based on a predetermined charge out ratio. Process the expense allocations to the relevant G/L accounts by processing journal entries in General Ledger application systems (PeopleSoft 8.9 or 9.2)
- Submit approved invoices received from various departments (Market Data, Voice, Real Estate, etc.) into SmartBuy for payment processing
- Prepare Reconciliations of intercompany accounts analyzing and resolving differences, if any
Oversee the payroll settlements with the Parent Bank for SCI (Global Banking and Markets and iTrade)
- Prepare bi-weekly payroll entries based on SAP HR Interface Load from the payroll department
- Submit intercompany cash settlement request in SmartBuy system for the payroll
- Clear the balances in payroll control account on a timely basis
Prepare Montreal Exchange Futures billings reports

- Submit weekly P&L reports to Product Control team for Montreal Exchange Futures to support Actual to Estimate process
- Liaise and obtain additional pricing information from the front-office trading department in relation to the futures trades
- Monthly billings of the trades to various financial institutions that act as agents for clients
- Process the deposit for the funds received related to the monthly billings
- Prepare reconciliation of the billing accounts and outstanding amounts
Provide reliable financial information, analyses and other support as required by senior management
- Identify the potential impact of changes/initiatives and provide appropriate feedback or recommendation
- Communicate with both internal and external auditors to explain various procedures and respond to queries
- Participate in ad-hoc financial projects as assigned
COMPLEXITY OF POSITION
- Requires equivalent of a university degree and working towards Professional Accounting designation such as CPA along with minimum two years of post-university working experience in an investment or financial institution industry.
- Solid background in accounting is essential to comprehend, interpret and compile complex projects, together with proven organizational skills.
- Ability to adapt to a number of conflicting deadlines and quickly grasp and work independently with minimal supervision.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with senior internal stakeholders and external professional practitioners.
- Strong PC skills and working knowledge of various operating systems used in the day-to-day operations of a Finance Department (PeopleSoft Financials, Broadridge, OBI, SmartView, Excel, Microsoft Office)
- A focus on process improvement and efficiency initiatives would be an asset.
