We are seeking a highly skilled and analytical Interest Rate focused Portfolio Manager to join our Core Fixed Income team (CFIT). As a Interest Rate Portfolio Manager, you are responsible for making investment recommendations and decisions based on the assessment of economic fundamentals, technical analysis, and relative value considerations, as appropriate within each portfolio’s objectives. 

 

You will need to support the CFIT’s operations, including trading capabilities and the monitoring of existing portfolio positioning to ensure that investment decisions are adhered to.  The Interest Rate Portfolio Manager will represent 1832 AM with internal and external counterparties, for the purposes of marketing and executing the CFIT growth initiatives, expanding the team’s research capabilities, general trading, and syndication discussions.

 

The ideal candidate will have a strong fundamental background in economics and a deep understanding of interest rate markets. This role involves developing and implementing timely interest rate strategies to optimize investment portfolios and support active trading decisions.

 

This position will bolster our existing Rates team by bring advanced expertise and experience in the Interest Rate / Fixed Income space.

 

Is this role right for you? In this role, you will:

 

Investment Strategy and Portfolio Management
•    Develop and implement interest rate strategies to generate risk adjusted alpha to the fixed income portfolio.
•    Analyze economic fundamentals and relative value opportunities to inform investment recommendations.
•    Execute trading strategies across assigned mandates and ensure ongoing portfolio maintenance.
•    Provide input on portfolio construction, assessing the impact of economic and market factors.
•    Oversee the use of derivatives to manage interest rate and credit risk.
•    Monitor portfolio risk exposures (CTDs, KRDs) to maintain alignment with strategies and objectives.
•    Ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and internal risk/compliance guidelines.

Market and Economic Research
•    Conduct on-going analysis of global and domestic interest rate markets, including economic indicators, monetary policies, and geopolitical events. 
•    Develop models to analyze, explain and forecast interest rate, economic behavior and patterns, and devise methods for collection and analysis of data. 
•    Perform in-depth economic research to forecast interest rate movements and provide actionable trade ideas in a timely manner.
Communication and Collaboration
•    Prepare detailed reports and presentations on interest rate trends, economic forecasts, and strategic recommendations for senior management.
•    Communicate complex interest rate strategies and market insights to internal clients and stakeholders in a clear and concise manner.
•    Work closely with investment team portfolio managers and other stakeholders to align interest rate strategies with overall investment objectives.

 

Do you have the skills that will enable you to succeed in this role? We’d love to work with you if you have:

 

•    Master’s degree in Economics, Finance, or a related field
•    CFA/CPA, MBA or related designation is an asset.
•    Minimum of 5 years of experience in interest rate strategy, economic research, or a related role within a financial institution or central bank.
•    Expert knowledge of Canadian and global interest rate markets.
•    Strong analytical and quantitative skills.
•    Experience in communicating actionable trade ideas in a timely matter in fast moving markets.
