Position: Managing Director, Sector Strategy and Business Development
 
Purpose
The National Accounts group in Canadian Commercial Banking is responsible for a diversified portfolio of corporate client relationship across various sectors. The Managing Director, Sector Strategy & Business Development is a leadership role accountable for building industry and sector specialization that directly fuels growth and profitability by integrating market insight into client strategy.
 
As Managing Director, the successful candidate will collaborate with senior bankers on high-impact relationships and take ownership of developing sector strategies. Key responsibilities include:
•    Define sector positioning, priority industries, and growth targets.
•    Develop market plans that inform coverage and influence transaction outcomes.
•    Build and maintain a senior external network to source timely market intelligence and validate sector theses.
•    Align industry strategies to the Bank’s industry-specific risk appetite and portfolio priorities.
 
This individual contributes to the overall success of the client-facing teams in CCB and ensures specific goals, plans, and initiatives are executed in line with business strategies and objectives.
 
Accountabilities
 
•    Design and implement industry-specific data-driven sales resources to provide relationship managers with guidance on new business opportunities, pricing, and covenant decisions based on transaction comparables to improve overall productivity and outcomes.
 
•    Champion a customer-focused culture to deepen client relationships and leverage broader Bank relationships, systems, and knowledge.
 
•    Support Relationship Managers in the structuring and distribution of sector and industry transactions.
 
•    Demonstrate an enhanced understanding of financial products, risk policies, lending guidelines, and credit processes, including execution experience.
 
•    Cultivate a senior external market network across sectors, sponsors, and financial intermediaries to source real time intelligence, validate sector theses, and shape the Bank’s engagement strategy across clients, transactions, and market forums.
 
•    Prepare and present pitch books, offering memorandums, marketing materials, and investor presentations.
 
•    Develop and maintain a broad network of internal and external contacts within the Canadian banking market.
 
•    Develop strategies to maximize fee retention, sector and industry penetration, and profitability, and to minimize potential overholds.
 
•    Provide sharp transaction analysis and strategic opinions to banking and GRM teams.
 
•    Advise on business development/new client opportunities ensuring alignment with growth strategies and current market conditions.
 
•    Understand how the Bank’s risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day activities and decisions.
 
•    Pursue effective and efficient operations in accordance with Scotiabank’s Values, its Code of Conduct, and the Global Sales Principles.
 
•    Ensure the adequacy and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations related to operational, compliance, AML/ATF/sanctions, and conduct risk.

Reporting Relationships
Primary Manager: Vice President & Head, National Accounts, Canadian Banking
Direct Reports: Associate Director, Sector Strategy and Growth, Canadian Commercial Banking
 
•    Dimensions - As the role and team expand, the Canadian Commercial Sector Strategy team may also support additional areas of Canadian Commercial Banking.
 
Education / Experience / Other Information
•    Demonstrated experience developing and scaling sector led growth strategies within a diversified corporate or commercial banking platform, including defining priority industries, articulating sector theses, and translating insight into sustained revenue growth, improved wallet share, and enhanced client penetration
•    Experience researching, preparing and presenting sector specific client materials, including pitch books, offering memoranda, investor presentations, and transaction positioning documents
•    Proven track record of leveraging sector and industry insight to differentiate client coverage, influence origination strategies, and drive fee based growth across complex lending and capital markets transactions.
•    Progressive experience in Corporate, Commercial, or Investment Banking, with significant exposure to complex credit structuring, loan syndications, and capital markets execution across multiple industries
•    Experience operating with an enterprise view of sector exposure and opportunity, balancing growth ambitions with portfolio concentration, risk appetite, and return thresholds to inform sector prioritization and resource deployment.
•    Experience leading portfolio strategy, sector concentration management, or enterprise growth initiatives within a regulated financial institution
•    Experience designing or implementing data driven sector tools, transaction comparables, or sales resources to support relationship teams and improve decision quality
•    Strong working knowledge of loan documentation and market practices.
•    Excellent networking skills and a proactive approach to relationship-building.
•    (preferred) Prior responsibility for national or cross regional mandates within a large financial institution and proven origination / sales experience
•    Undergraduate degree in business or economics or work equivalency. Other training requirements as determined by the Bank from time to time.
 
Working Conditions
•    Work in a standard office-based environment; non-standard hours are a common occurrence.  Travel is required, if / as necessary to support transactions.
