The Manager, Financial Analytics provides budgeting and financial analysis for the Insurance Canada team. The position reconciles financial data from a variety of sources and prepares complex and comprehensive financial analyses and reports to support business line management activities as well as cost forecasting and reporting to support the budget and business case management processes.

 

Insurance is a complex business impacted by the underlying credit products, strategies and processes in addition to insurance-specific factors.

 

Is this role right for you? In this role, you will:

 

Financial Management

 

  • Proactively monitor profitability and insurance risk and P&L, and provide strategic solutions to mitigate risk and maintain profitability by developing and maintaining optimal, efficient and accurate financial management and reporting system using data from multiple sources (i.e. Scotiabank systems, multiple insurers, actuarial systems, third party vendors)
  • Lead financial management and reporting with Finance and Actuarial teams
  • Develop, maintain and streamline financial planning, reporting, analysis
  • Collaborate with internal and external partners to create reporting which supports the end-to-end insurance business (i.e. Revenue, remittance, claims, underwriting, settlements, general ledger reconciliations, expenses, etc.)
  • Monitor and report on key financial performance indicators including premium, claims and expense results, and monthly trends
  • Manage financial risk through monitoring of claims experience, underwriting and process/policy changes
  • Create and maintain financial management database and processes to produce timely reports
  • Become a SME in data reconciliations and managing actual vs. plan results

 

Business Performance & Analysis
 

  • Support and develop insurance analytics strategy, manage in-house business analytics, and monitor portfolio trends
  • Develop Insurance KPI dashboards to accurately evaluate business performance in a timely manner; tracking of actuals vs. plan results and creating effective data visualizations to tell the story
  • Perform and deliver on ad-hoc reporting and requests from the business, providing input into customer strategy, value propositions, etc.

 

Strategic Initiatives

 

  • Support the Senior Manager with the development of new products and strategies for distribution through Bank channels and third party/open architecture distribution channels

 

Product, Channel and Market Development
 

  • Support market and product intelligence research (i.e. Market, industry, regulatory, local economic conditions, legal, compliance, insurance and banking laws, social/demographic impacts and existing infrastructures, etc.)
  • Support development of business cases for executive approvals
  • Create emerging markets and trends research and analysis
  • Provide meaningful, relevant and insightful analysis of customer data, market trends, industry best practices and actionable recommendations to senior management to maximize premium and NIAT growth

 

 

  • Understand how the Bank’s risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day activities and decisions.

 

  • Create an environment in which his/her team pursues effective and efficient operations of his/her respective areas in accordance with Scotiabank’s Values, its Code of Conduct and the Global Sales Principles, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational, compliance, AML/ATF/sanctions and conduct risk.

 

 

 

Do you have the skills that will enable you to succeed in this role? We'd love to work with you if you have:

 

  • A post-secondary education in Business, Finance, Mathematics or a related discipline
  • Strong experience with financial planning, reporting and financial analysis
  • Expert experience with the use of MS Office tools, particularly with Excel for building financial models
  • Deep experience with data analysis techniques
  • Strong knowledge of budgeting and forecasting functions
  • Knowledge of database programming, extraction and manipulation of data (SAS, SQL, etc.), as well as data visualization and BI tools (i.e. Power BI, Tableau, etc.); willingness to learn new systems and technology as needed
  • Understanding of P&L
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to present insights
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work efficiently and independently in a dynamic business environment
