The incumbent will support the Bank’s OFAC Advisory team in all Global Banking and Markets (GBM) jurisdictions and will be responsible for identifying new regulations and emerging risks that impact the Bank. The incumbent will also contribute to the overall success of the Global Sanctions & Screening (GSS) team by ensuring specific individual goals, plans, and initiatives are executed / delivered in support of the team’s business strategies and objectives.


•    As a sanctions subject matter expert and first point of contact, provide advisory services critical to the sustainment of Scotiabank’s Sanctions Program.
•    Review Customer Due Diligence (CDD) escalations from a U.S. and Canadian sanctions perspective and draft advice and counsel on applicable sanctions, policies, and standards. Provide advice and counsel to business lines and compliance functions, which may include: 
            - recommending approval or denial of customers with sanctions exposure; and
            - advising on investment banking and corporate banking deals from sanctions perspective.
•    Research customer relationships that alert for potential sanctions concerns.
•    Draft, distribute, and publish bank-wide sanctions advisory announcements upon major changes in sanctions regulations.
•    Review processes and procedures of business lines and relevant operating units to ensure consistency with Scotiabank’s Sanctions Program.
•    Contribute to content, design, and delivery of sanctions training programs and related education initiatives.
•    Contribute to the content and design of regulatory reports, including Program metrics, for Senior/Executive Management.
•    Proactively identify improvements or necessary modifications to policies and procedures.
•    Develop close working relationships with business lines and other key groups.

•    Perform ad hoc tasks as assigned.


Education / Experience


•    Minimum 3-5 years of sanctions advisory or sanctions investigation experience. 
•    Minimum B.A. in criminal justice, business, finance, law, international affairs or similar related major.
•    Thorough knowledge of international sanctions risk management standards and industry best practices. 
•    Excellent written and verbal communication skills, able to manage difficult conversations. 
•    Capable of working independently and solving problems under high level guidance.
•    Demonstrated integrity when working with colleagues and leading others by setting example of required behaviours.
•    Can think “outside of the box” and make process improvement recommendations.
•    Adapt to a fast-paced, dynamic environment and be able to meet strict deliverable deadlines.
•    Proven experience identifying and implementing process enhancements as well as the experience to oversee the resolution of process deficiencies and drive operational efficiency without compromising compliance requirements.
•    Results oriented, highly motivated with a keen ability to influence others.
•    Skilled proficiency with MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and other related productivity tools.
