Purpose

Integral member of the Global Sovereign - Fixed Income team ensuring business strategies, plans and initiatives are executed / delivered in compliance with governing regulations, internal policies and procedures

 

Accountabilities

  • Directly supports the Senior Manager, Global Sovereign - Fixed Income, providing insights on Global Sovereign bond markets and individual securities
  • Assist in managing portfolios of sovereign/government bonds, by collaborating with regional teams, by forming views on investment processes and outcomes including duration, yield curve positioning, countries fiscal positions/government finances, Central Bank monetary policies vs. market expectations, macroeconomic perspectives, liquidity/mispriced/attractive securities and finding value in both the primary and secondary markets
  • Monitors global fixed income markets and deliver strong risk-adjusted returns for relationship managers and clients, adjusting strategies and processes as necessary to optimize performance
  • Engages issuers, sales & trading and external research resources to effectively monitor existing credit and duration risk, performance, process improvements and adherence to investment guidelines
  • Contribute to Global Investment Solutions (GIS) written and verbal publications and presentations to support Scotiabank Global Wealth advisors and relationship managers.  Respond to advisor and relationship manager inquiries, portfolio construction proposals, share market knowledge insights and fixed income market trends.  Enhance partnership with Global Banking & Markets to develop fixed income thought leadership to Global Wealth.
  • Collaborate with other GIS equity and strategy teams, fostering a culture of excellence and co-ordination and strive to enhance GIS’ collective understanding of fixed income market developments.
  • Develop and deliver resources and tools to enhance advisors’ understanding of fixed income strategies and market trends
  • Understand how the Bank’s risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day activities and decisions.
  • Creates an environment in which his/her team pursues effective and efficient operations of his/her respective areas, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational risk, regulatory compliance risk, AML/ATF risk and conduct risk, including but not limited to responsibilities under the Operational Risk Management Framework, Regulatory Compliance Risk Management Framework, AML/ATF Global Handbook and the Guidelines for Business Conduct.
  • Builds a high-performance environment and implements a people strategy that attracts, retains, develops and motivates their team by fostering an inclusive work environment and using a coaching mindset and behaviours; communicating vison/values/business strategy; and managing succession and development planning for the team.

 

Education / Experience / Other Information (include only those that are specific to the role)

  • Deep knowledge and understanding of global financial markets and investment industry
  • Extensive understanding the global fixed income markets, particularly but not limited to Canada, the US, Europe, LATAM
  • Working on CFA designation (CFA Level 1), Finance degree and proficiency requirements for registration with Canadian securities regulators
  • 3 years+ experience in government bond analysis, portfolio construction, managing fixed income portfolios.  Working knowledge of Excel/Microsoft, Bloomberg system.  Some understanding of quantitative modeling/statistical models would be an asset.
  • Excellent communication skills – ability to communicate effectively with well-established written, verbal and interpersonal skills necessary to present complex technical information to non-financial stakeholders.
  • Strong aptitude to motivate team members and encourage a thriving, team-first culture.  Brings a spirit of collaboration with the ability to maintain strong working relationships with peers and leaders with the organization
