Purpose

The Canadian Banking (CB) Expense Management team is responsible for enabling effective expense management through strategic, insightful, and timely financial analysis in a fast-changing environment, including end‑to‑end reporting and oversight of both business line and corporate functions expense portfolios. Expenses are managed through a matrix view by expense category and CB business lines (Retail Banking, Business Banking, Commercial Banking, and Tangerine). The Manager, Expense Management plays a critical role in end-to-end ownership of expense forecasting, planning, and reporting, providing actionable insights and clear narratives to CB executive management. The role is expected to lead complex analyses, influence business partners, and drive continuous improvement in expense management processes, tools, and governance.

 

Is this role right for you? In this role you will:

Expense Forecasting, Planning & Reporting (Primary Accountability)

  • Own the preparation, consolidation, and analysis of Canadian Banking non‑interest expenses across forecasting, planning, and management reporting cycles, encompassing both business line and corporate functions expense reporting, including:
  • Post‑quarter and pre‑quarter forecasts
  • Quarter‑end reasonability reviews
  • Stress testing and scenario analysis
  • Annual Profit Plan and multi‑year outlooks
  • Ensure accuracy, completeness, and consistency of expense results and forecasts across business lines and corporate functions. Lead corporate functions expense reporting, including variance analysis and clear articulation of cost drivers, risks, and forward-looking outlooks.
  • Lead quarterly and monthly executive reporting deliverables (e.g., forecast decks, Blue Book, MMR/QMR materials), ensuring clear variance drivers and forward‑looking insights.
  • Provide effective challenge to submissions from CB business lines and corporate functions partners, identifying risks, opportunities, and emerging trends.

 

Business Partnering & Executive Support

  • Act as a trusted finance partner to CB business lines on all expense‑related matters, with primary accountability for corporate functions expense reporting, analysis, and executive commentary.
  • Translate complex financial data into clear, executive‑ready insights and recommendations for senior management.
  • Respond to ad hoc executive requests with speed, rigor, and sound judgment, including deep‑dive analyses and scenario modelling.

 

Analytics, Insights & Value‑Add

  • Perform detailed analytics to explain drivers of expense performance versus forecast, plan, and prior periods, with particular focus on corporate functions expense trends and allocation impacts.
  • Develop value‑added insights to support expense optimization and productivity improvement.
  • Lead scenario analysis (e.g., cost‑out, reinvestment, volume sensitivity) and clearly articulate P&L and ratio impacts.
  • Synthesize insights across multiple data sources to support strategic discussions.

 

Process Ownership, Controls & Tools

  • Own and continuously improve expense planning, forecasting, and reporting processes, templates, and consolidation models, including those supporting corporate functions expense submissions, allocations, and downstream reporting.
  • Ensure models reflect organizational, account, and structural changes, and are appropriately updated in planning systems (e.g., Anaplan, Hyperion, SmartView, EGL/OBI).
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on CB expense systems and data flows, ensuring strong reconciliations and data integrity.
  • Maintain effective internal controls over forecasting and reporting processes, including EUC and SOX requirements, and GL attestation.

 

Change Management, Projects & Leadership

  • Lead or support change initiatives and special projects related to expense management, process simplification, and automation.
  • Drive continuous improvement in analytics, models, and reporting efficiency.
  • Coach and provide guidance to analysts and business partners on expense management principles, tools, and best practices.
  • Support the Senior Manager/Director in advancing team capabilities and resilience during peak reporting periods.

 

  • Champion a customer focused culture to deepen client relationships and leverage broader Bank relationships, systems and knowledge.
  • Understand how the Bank’s risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day activities and decisions.
  • Actively pursues effective and efficient operations of his/her respective areas in accordance with Scotiabank’s Values, its Code of Conduct and the Global Sales Principles, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational, compliance, AML/ATF/sanctions and conduct risk.

Do you have the skills that will enable you to succeed in this role? We'd love to work with you if you have:

  • University degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related discipline.
  • 3–5+ years of relevant experience in financial planning, forecasting, or management reporting, preferably within Canadian Banking or a large financial institution.
  • Professional designation (CPA, CFA, or MBA) preferred.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and financial planning/reporting tools (e.g., Hyperion, SmartView).
  • Strong understanding of financial and management reporting principles.
  • Proven ability to synthesize complex data into clear insights for senior audiences.
  • Strong analytical judgment, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple priorities under tight deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence stakeholders and operate effectively in a matrixed, fast paced environment.
