Purpose

Leads and oversees Expense Accounting Oversight / Global Payment Operations in Canada ensuring business strategies, plans and initiatives are executed / delivered in compliance with governing regulations, internal policies and procedures.

 

Is this role right for you? In this role you will:

  • Lead and drive a customer focused culture throughout their team to deepen client relationships and leverage broader Bank relationships, systems, and knowledge
  • Manage a team of operational personnel in Toronto that provides oversight on expense accounting including expense GL reclassifications, accruals, deferrals & pre-payments, asset management, cheque deposits, payroll, etc.
  • Prepare and maintain operational procedures related to expense accounting processes and oversight activities
  • Interact remotely with Global Finance Services Unit processing team in Bogota, Colombia including conducting training of staff and providing clarification on operating procedures
  • Provide coaching and feedback to GPO (Global Payment Operations) team members, support employee personal development plans, and promote collaboration to ensure business continuity and success of continuous improvement initiatives
  • Co-ordinate the review and execution of complex accounting entries (e.g. intercompany settlements for Residual Profit Sharing and intercompany Service Level Agreement (SLA) invoices)
  • Consolidate Fixed Assets continuity schedules into the Financial Statement notes
  • Contribute requirements that deploy automation and AI for processing and monitoring of journal entry transactions
  • Contribute to the maintenance of SOX documentation describing the controls for expense recording
  • Act as Business Partner to advise on Business Unit (BU) specific journal entry submissions and responds to BU escalations
  • Monitor operational efficiency and effectiveness through the development, maintenance, and reporting of expense accounting KPIs/KRIs
  • Understand how the Bank’s risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day activities and decisions
  • Create an environment in which their team pursues effective and efficient operations of their respective areas in accordance with Scotiabank’s Values, its Code of Conduct, and the Global Sales Principles, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational, compliance, AML/ATF/sanctions and conduct risk
  • Build a high-performance environment and implement a people strategy that attracts, retains, develops and motivates their team by fostering an inclusive work environment and using a coaching mindset and behaviours; communicating vison/values/business strategy; and managing succession and development planning for the team
  • Oversee team of 3 full-time employees
  • Regular in-person interaction with Finance personnel in Toronto
  • Regular remote interaction with Accounts Payable personnel GBS located in Bogota, Colombia
  • Subject to SOX reporting and control accountabilities for expense recording that are audited annually
  • Support all business units in Canada

 

Do you have the skills that will enable you to succeed in this role? We'd love to work with you if you have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business administration, Accounting, Economics, Commerce or other Finance fields of study
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in a Senior accounting capacity
  • Knowledge of PeopleSoft ERP modules: AP, GL, AM, PC, Excel
