The Manager will be part of the ESG Risk team within Scotiabank’s Global Risk Management department, the Bank’s Second Line of Defense.  This individual will be contributing to the team’s oversight of the Bank’s ESG risk management programs by ensuring specific individual goals, plans, and initiatives are executed / delivered in support of the team’s business strategies and objectives. 

Reporting to the Director – ESG Risk Advisory & Oversight, the Manager will help the Director and team oversee the integration and execution of various aspects of Scotiabank’s ESG Risk Management Framework and its underlying policies and processes, with a focus on human rights and other social elements across the Bank’s business activities and operations. The Manager will be expected to be familiar with social and human rights risk assessment methodologies and standards insofar as they are relevant for the financial services industry. They will also be expected to be familiar with regulatory requirements and developing industry standards and best practices.

  • Champion a customer focused culture to deepen client relationships and leverage broader Bank relationships, systems, and knowledge.
  • Support credit due diligence and adjudication processes by providing advice and counsel, and effective challenge on the materiality of potential social risks and/or impacts and adequacy of the client’s management and mitigation program.
  • Assess new business initiatives for social risks and/or impacts.  
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of social risk management policies, processes and controls.
  • Integrate and maintain social risk due diligence policies, processes and controls, as necessary.  
  • Maintain the Bank’s list of pre-qualified environmental and social consulting firms.
  • Maintain and advance internal industry classification and rating systems for social risks and impacts.
  • Monitor and communicate new and emerging social risk-related issues, regulations, and legislation.
  • Advise on social risk-related data, metrics and reporting requirements.   
  • Contribute to the development and delivery of ESG risk management training.
  • Contribute to internal and external reporting of the Bank’s management of ESG risks.
  • Understand how the Bank’s risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day activities and decisions.
  • Actively pursue effective and efficient operations of his/her respective areas, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational risk, regulatory compliance risk, AML/ATF risk and conduct risk, including but not limited to responsibilities under the Operational Risk Management Framework, Regulatory Compliance Risk Management Framework, AML/ATF Global Handbook, and the Guidelines for Business Conduct.

Do you have the skills that will enable you to succeed in this role? We'd love to work with you if you have:
 

  • Has an undergraduate and/or graduate degree in relevant field.
  • At least 3-5 years of relevant environmental and social risk management experience. Experience in a risk or audit role at a financial institution would be an asset,
  • Knowledge of social and human rights risks and their potential impact on financial institutions and their stakeholders.
  • Familiarity with social risk management and reporting laws, regulations, standards, guidelines and best practices applicable to the financial sector, such as the Equator Principles, IFC Performance Standards on Environmental and Social Sustainability, United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, Canada’s Fighting Against Forced Labour and Child Labour in Supply Chains Act, and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples to name a few.
  • Experience conducting social and/or human rights risk assessments and/or Environmental and Social Impacts Assessments for large-scale development projects would be an asset.
  • In-depth understanding of Indigenous Rights, including Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) is preferred.    
  • Strong communication and relationship skills with a proven track record of engaging and presenting to stakeholders.
  • Spanish language fluency would be considered an asset.
