Purpose
The Manager, Business/ML Operations & Data is responsible for end‑to‑end ownership of the AI and machine‑learning operational environment that enables scalable, secure, and reliable data and ML capabilities within Global Compliance.
Operating under the direction of the Senior Manager, Data Modelling, this hands‑on ML Operations role owns the implementation, stability, and ongoing operation of AI/ML platforms, including virtual machines, data pipelines, ML workflows, and cloud‑based analytics environments. The role serves as the team’s primary owner of ML infrastructure and platform operations, ensuring solutions are production‑ready, auditable, and aligned with enterprise technology and security standards, while supporting the organization’s transition to cloud‑based analytics.
Accountabilities
ML Infrastructure & Platform Operations
- Own the day‑to‑day operation, reliability, and availability of the AI/ML environment, including:
- Virtual machine provisioning, configuration, and lifecycle management
- Patch management and environment hardening
- Access management and entitlement controls
- Resource utilization, capacity planning, and system health monitoring
- Act as the primary operational owner for analytics and ML environments, ensuring stability across development, testing, and production.
- Proactively monitor, triage, and resolve infrastructure or platform issues impacting data pipelines or ML workloads.
ML Operations & Workflow Management
- Establish and maintain ML operations standards for analytics and ML assets, including:
- Code versioning and repository practices
- Release and deployment processes
- Environment consistency and configuration management
- Support and troubleshoot workflow orchestration and scheduling tools (e.g., Airflow), including dependency management, failure analysis, and recovery.
- Define and implement operational practices (logging, monitoring, runbooks, backup and restore awareness) to support platform stability and audit readiness.
Data Pipelines & Architecture Enablement
- Translate approved data architecture into detailed technical specifications, including source‑to‑target mappings and transformation logic.
- Provide hands‑on support for physical data modeling and data structure design within the data consumption and analytics layers.
- Review and validate ETL and data pipeline implementations to ensure architectural alignment, data integrity, and downstream usability.
- Support data governance by implementing data quality controls, lineage documentation, and traceability across data pipelines.
Cloud Enablement & Enterprise Alignment
- Support the migration and operation of cloud‑based analytics and ML platforms, ensuring solutions are scalable, secure, and operationally sustainable.
- Partner with Enterprise Technology, Infrastructure, and Security teams to ensure platforms comply with internal technology standards, security controls, and regulatory expectations.
- Contribute to the evolution of scalable ML operations practices that support repeatable model development, deployment, and ongoing execution.
Risk, Controls & Leadership
- Demonstrate awareness of the Bank’s risk appetite and risk culture in day‑to‑day operational decisions.
- Ensure ML platforms and data pipelines operate in alignment with Scotiabank’s Values, Code of Conduct, and Global Sales Principles, maintaining strong controls across operational, compliance, and conduct risk.
- Foster a high‑performance, inclusive work environment, acting as a trusted operational leader for ML platforms within Global Compliance.
Education/Experience
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Data Science, or a related technical discipline.
- 3–5+ years of hands‑on experience supporting AI/ML platforms, MLOps, DevOps, or analytics infrastructure in production environments.
- Strong proficiency in Python and SQL, with practical experience supporting:
- CI/CD pipelines for analytics and ML workloads
- Development and production environments
- Operational controls such as versioning, release management, and environment consistency
- Experience operating and supporting workflow orchestration and scheduling tools (e.g., Airflow), including dependency management, failure triage, and collaboration with IT teams on ETL and data pipeline implementation.
- Solid understanding of end‑to‑end ML development and deployment workflows, including model lifecycle management, execution dependencies, and production operational considerations.
- Working knowledge of infrastructure and platform concepts such as virtual machines, access controls, patching, monitoring, and system health management.
- Experience working in regulated or risk‑managed environments and exposure to data governance, audit, or control frameworks considered strong assets.
- Hands‑on technical problem solver with the ability to operate across infrastructure, platform, and data layers, and quickly diagnose issues impacting ML or analytics workloads.
- Clear, structured communicator with a strong ownership mindset, customer focus, and attention to operational stability, reliability, and control.
