The IT Asset Management (ITAM) function is responsible for maximizing the business value of technology assets while managing cost, risk, and compliance across the full asset lifecycle—from strategy and acquisition through optimization and retirement.

 


The Director, ITAM – Software Asset Management is accountable for transforming Software Asset Management into a strategic, data driven enterprise capability. This role leads the governance, operating model, and digital evolution of SAM to ensure accurate visibility of software assets, proactive risk management, and measurable financial outcomes.

 


The Director acts as the enterprise authority on software asset data, enabling informed technology investment, sourcing, and vendor negotiation decisions across IT, Finance, Procurement, and the business. This includes software assets owned or managed by IT&S, third party service providers, and business units.

 

 

Is this role right for you? In this role, you will:
• Define and execute the enterprise Software Asset Management strategy and multi year transformation roadmap, shifting SAM from a reactive compliance function to a proactive, value driven capability.
• Lead the modernization of the SAM operating model, including process redesign, automation, continuous controls, and integration with IT Service Management, Procurement, Finance, and Vendor Management.
• Establish and mature SAM governance frameworks, policies, and standards aligned with enterprise risk appetite and regulatory expectations.
• Deliver measurable financial value through software optimization, cost avoidance, and improved vendor negotiation outcomes.
• Provide accurate and timely software entitlement, consumption, and cost insights to support budgeting, forecasting, intragroup pricing, and technology investment decisions.
• Lead enterprise readiness for software vendor audits, minimizing financial, operational, and reputational risk.
• Own and oversee the Unauthorized Software process, ensuring continuous compliance and risk mitigation.
• Own the SAM digital and data strategy, leveraging platforms such as ServiceNow SAM and related tooling to enable reliable, real time insights.
• Drive automation, data quality, reconciliation, and analytics capabilities to support continuous compliance and decision making.
• Establish enterprise standards for software asset data quality, lineage, and reporting, ensuring trust and transparency across stakeholders.
• Act as a trusted advisor to senior leaders, providing actionable insights that influence technology strategy, sourcing decisions, and vendor negotiations.
• Build strong partnerships with Finance, Procurement, Sourcing, Vendor Management, Legal, Risk, and Technology leaders to embed SAM into enterprise decision processes.
• Represent the organization in strategic engagements with software vendors and service providers, including audit discussions and commercial negotiations.
• Build and lead a high performing, globally distributed SAM organization, fostering a culture of accountability, innovation, and continuous improvement.
• Develop talent through coaching, succession planning, and capability uplift aligned to modern SAM and digital skills.
• Provide oversight and direction to third party SAM service providers, ensuring performance, value realization, and alignment to enterprise objectives.
• Ensure SAM activities operate in full alignment with the organization’s risk culture, Code of Conduct, and regulatory obligations, including operational, compliance, AML/ATF, sanctions, and conduct risk.
• Maintain effective controls and assurance mechanisms across SAM processes and data.

• Lead the key initiatives include Enterprise ITAM/SAM Transformation, large scale software reconciliation programs, and tooling modernization

• Demonstrated ability to define and lead large scale transformation programs in complex, regulated environments
• Strong executive presence with the ability to influence senior stakeholders and drive cross functional change
• Proven experience operating in matrixed organizations with multiple internal and external partners
• Deep expertise in Software Asset Management, IT Asset Lifecycle Management, and governance best practices
• Strong financial, analytical, and commercial acumen, including the ability to interpret and manage complex software contracts (license, subscription, SaaS, and maintenance)
• Advanced capability in data analysis, reporting, and automation
• Experience leading enterprise platform implementations and capability verification
• Senior management experience in ITAM, SAM, IT, Finance, Procurement, or related disciplines
• Demonstrated success delivering SAM or ITAM capability uplift and measurable business outcomes
• Experience engaging with sourcing, procurement, vendor management, legal, finance, and audit stakeholders
• Experience with tools such as ServiceNow SAM, ILMT, BigFix, Tanium, SCCM, Coupa, or equivalent platforms
• Undergraduate or postgraduate degree in IT, Finance, Engineering, Business Management, or related field
• ITIL Foundation
• Certified IT Asset Manager (CITAM)
• Additional qualifications in financial accounting, project management, or data analytics
