Purpose of Job: 

Provides strategic direction, leadership, risk management, and oversight for the Investment & Advisory Solutions Group in Canadian and International Wealth Management.  The Lead Investment Strategist manages the Equities, Fixed Income and Investment Strategy team to ensure business strategies, plans and initiatives are supported in compliance with governing regulations, internal policies and procedures.

 

Major Accountabilities:

  • Leads and drives a customer focused culture throughout their team to deepen client relationships and leverage broader Bank relationships, systems and knowledge.  Responsible for supporting ScotiaMcLeod, PIC, Scotiatrust, and iTrade both domestically and across IIA overseeing over $150bn of assets under advisory (AUA).

 

  • Leads the development, execution and sustainment of a strategic business plan for the Global Portfolio Advisory Group (GPAG), ensuring a framework of risk policies, practices and procedures are in place to promote, monitor and manage prudent risk taking across all product lines.  The team is responsible for all asset allocation, equity and fixed income guided portfolios, and mutual fund / ETF / alternative asset recommended lists. Guidance is provided to advisors overseeing ~$150bn in assets, including several billion that strictly adhere to GPAG’s recommendations and model portfolios.

 

  • Supports domestic and international wealth partner’s ability to retain and attract ultra-high-net-worth clients (>$10 million) through participation in individual meetings and the provision of customized content.     

 

  • Directs day-to-day activities in a manner consistent with the Bank’s risk culture and the relevant risk appetite statement and limits.   Communicates the Bank’s risk culture and risk appetite statement throughout their teams.

 

  • Creates an environment in which his/her team pursues effective and efficient operations of his/her respective areas, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational risk, regulatory compliance risk, AML/ATF risk and conduct risk, including but not limited to responsibilities under the Operational Risk Management Framework, Regulatory Compliance Risk Management Framework, AML/ATF Global Handbook and the Guidelines for Business Conduct.

 

  • Builds a high performance environment and implements a people strategy that attracts, retains, develops and motivates their team by fostering an inclusive work environment; communicating vison/values/business strategy and managing succession and development planning for the team.

 

 

Education/ Work Experience/ Designations

  • Minimum 10 years of investment management experience
  • CFA is preferred or experience in lieu of
  • MBA or finance related post-secondary education
  • Experience using Bloomberg, Morningstar, and/or other portfolio technology software
  • In-depth knowledge of financial products, securities, portfolio construction, etc.
  • Well-rounded direct experience supporting an advisory salesforce
  • Demonstrated experience working at the executive level
  • Strong knowledge of regulatory requirements around financial markets within Canada
  • Demonstrated success managing a senior multi-disciplined team
  • Open to travelling when it is safe to do so
