We’re looking to fill our team with influencers, makers, creators and leaders who are flexible, curious, adventurous, versatile and responsive; and who are ready to roll up their sleeves in a collaborative and productive environment to get things done.

By joining our team, you will make an impact on our customers, the banking industry, and ultimately, the world.

About the Director, Global Digital Design System

  • You will have the unique opportunity to influence the design direction of one of Canada's largest financial services experience.
  • You will be a brand champion at the pixel level: developing and helping to evolve the overall look and feel of our Digital Design System product.
  • You will take our digital design system to the next level.

The Director of Design Systems will work with and on Scotiabank’s digital design language, Canvas. Emphasis will be on the complete systems life-cycle, from design and build to the documentation and maintenance of the systems library. Candidates must have a deep passion for all things design and technology and strive to push the innovative thinking of every design challenge.

Is this role right for you?

  • You can work with and mentor a small team of Product Designers and Front-End Engineers to execute on the needs of the Canvas Design System.
  • You will create roadmaps, process documentation, work-streams, and project milestones for the Canvas Design System.
  • You will confirm that all design system teams are executing work up to the standards set and that adheres to the design guidelines.
  • You will report team and system progress regularly to primary director leads and executive/VP+ level sponsors.
  • You can present the system’s mission, library, and process to other groups, including product managers, content specialists, QA, and other design and development teams throughout the enterprise.
  • You can review library docs for editorial quality, consistency, and usefulness
  • You can identify and nurture team growth and culture, identifying opportunities for team members to drive and lead system aspects.
  • You can decisively resolve priorities, timing, risks, task importance, and possible breaking changes.
  • You can clarify scope to balance delivering minimum useful functionality with properly scalable system design.
  • You can interview and foster discussions with others using the system and align research activity to assess efficacy of system concerns.
  • You are open, persuasive, engaging and love to have a good laugh.

Do you have the skills that will enable you to succeed?

  • 7-10+ years experience in one or more of: product management of web-based sites and/or applications, information architecture, interaction design, front end development, or business analysis.

  • Comfortable working in a self-guided manner with the ability to prioritize tasks and manage your own time efficiently, without direct input or oversight; further, you are able to balance great design with short and sometimes uncomfortable deadlines.
  • An entrepreneurial mindset with the ability to act both strategically and tactically; providing long-range thought leadership on the future of design in partnership with design leaders in the Design Community of Practice
  • Deep understanding of human-centered approach and methods to design.
  • Willingness to roll up your sleeves and get it done.
  • A passion for changing the way people bank and a willingness to live in the future and build what’s missing.
  • 10+ years as a digital creative director, preferably in e-commerce, digital sales and application environments; 15+ years of experience working in digital as a creative professional (digital art director, writer, graphic designer, user experience designer, etc.)
  • 10+ years building and developing high-performance creative design teams in fast-paced evolving organizations; demonstrated ability to attract outstanding talent, and inspire/coach them to be their best.
  • Post-secondary education in Design, Communications, the Fine Arts or a related field
  • A demonstrable portfolio of work (professional and personal) which showcases your stylistic breadth, attention to detail, and which balances beauty, innovation and usability.
  • Expert level of proficiency in Adobe CC (Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop).
