Job Purpose:


The Director, Financial Analysis & Review provides value-added analysis and recommendations on the Bank’s strategic, technology and operational investments, identifies opportunities for savings and drives effective expense management for business case and project spending for the Corporate Functions as well as at the all Bank level, which includes:


  • business case review for all significant technology based projects in all Business Lines and Corporate Functions
  • oversight on capital expenditure processes (from planning to reporting and analysis) and project control activities, including projects related to the Bank’s key strategic initiatives and core Banking activities
  • governance over business case/project approval and funding processes and technology tools
  • preparation of timely, relevant and meaningful analysis and reporting to Executive Management, primarily related to business and project portfolio spending (e.g. cash flow and P&L view, software amortization, benefits).


This position has a high level of interaction with business partners and Senior Executives across the Bank.


Key Accountabilities:


  1. Business Strategy
    • Provide input to the strategic planning process by providing timely analysis and reporting on the Bank’s capital expenditures, and the All Bank depreciation and amortization; ensure inclusion in BlueBook and other Executive reporting as appropriate
    • Work with internal stakeholders to help them make informed decisions pertaining to budget planning (project related), forecasting, and potential cost reduction activities, as well as assisting with the preparation of business case proposals (including proposals for the SPPC and/or OpCo)
    • Develop and execute the framework for and implementation of a consistent, regular exercise to obtain a forward looking view on significant enterprise projects, including the projected impact on relevant expense categories (i.e. software amortization).
  2. Business Plan Execution
    • Manage the All Bank capital budget planning and reporting process.  Activities include: planning, consolidation, analysis, testing for reasonability, and reporting of budgets on a quarterly and annual basis
    • Oversee the project approval process from business case presentation through to completion of approved projects and post-implementation case review process (including those presented at the SPPC). 
  3. Financial & Operational Excellence
    • Provide governance from an All Bank perspective over business case approval process
    • Ownership and management of the Expenditure Approval Authority Limits, including the communication of changes
    • Manage the project initiation process on Smartstream for all significant projects.
    • Ensure compliance with SOX and Audit requirements
  4. Customer Service & Relationship Management
    • Develop alliances with key contacts and business partners (Divisional PMOs, business sponsors, executives) and stakeholders to provide value-added analysis and insight on business case and budget review.
    • Build and reinforce effective working relationships and collaboration within and across the Finance Community and the Bank.
  5. Leadership & Employee Engagement
    • Develop and execute meaningful employee development plans and recognize team development needs; taking an active role in addressing gaps
    • Integrate ViewPoint survey to continually improve and leverage team performance and satisfaction


Functional Competencies:


  • Demonstrated leadership skills and ability to coach a team of finance professionals.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills
  • Ability to sustain a broad-based knowledge of the Bank's and Business Lines' strategy, operations, policies and procedures.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Ability to multi-task effectively
  • Results-oriented and is able to lead change with a culture of continuous improvement
  • Strong MS Office suite skills (Excel, Powerpoint, Word)


Education/Work Experience:


  • University Degree in Business or similar discipline, MBA or similar post-secondary education
  • Accounting designation would be an asset
  • Minimum of 5-10 years of relevant experience


Other Information:


  • The incumbent works independently and is expected to exercise a high degree of judgment and discretion within the context of approved budgets, authorities and Bank policies
  • Receives direction of a general nature from the  VP, Corporate Functions & Expense Management, and VP, Global Financial Planning & Analysis
