The Team and the Role

 

With a global mandate, the Data Protection team provides data protection governance and oversight and ensures effective data loss prevention activities across various systems, applications and third parties that directly support the bank's business. The Director, Data Protection - Program Management supports program governance, change management, provides project management support and oversees training initiatives globally ensuring business strategies, plans and initiatives are executed / delivered in compliance with governing regulations, internal policies and procedures.

 

This role directly supports the Senior Vice-President, Office of the Chief Technology Officer and Vice President, IT Risk to collaboratively assess, analyze and quantify data protection, design controls and assist in their implementation within the business line. This role is part of a strategic and comprehensive Data Protection Management function within the First Line of Defence, ensuring implementation in accordance with regulatory expectations, risk appetite, organizational risk practices and evolving business practices.

 

Accountabilities

 

  • Provides program/project level governance and change support to ensure the vision and objectives of the large-scale Data Protection transformations are driven properly and ensures change management (the mechanisms of change) are in place to deliver the anticipated program benefits.
  • Collaborates with multiple technology teams, including infrastructure engineers, security engineers, developers, architects, security operations, security advisors and technology risk teams to develop change management and data protection training plans.
  • Supports and ensures appropriate communication processes are followed when there are major changes to data protection controls so that employees understand what is changing, why it is changing, how the changes will affect them, and what action they need to take during and post launch.
  • Provides regular reporting updates to Senior Leadership and Councils on progress of program change management activities.
  • Acts as a key interface with project/delivery managers to obtain program updates and identify barriers and challenges which may require escalation to the Executive team for action. 
  • Assists with the facilitation of program updates to the various Data Protection Committees and Councils.
  • Provides guidance and knowledge in program change by ensuring data protection related changes follow the established organization wide change management guidelines to minimize business disruption and user impact.
  • Manages and oversees effective and engaging data protection training programs for the bank to create organizational-wide awareness and a security-based mindset for all employees.
  • Facilitates learning courses and programs, ensuring delivery is aligned with goals and objectives developed by the Data Protection Program.
  • Maintains ongoing relationships with Learning COE to gain an understanding of learning programs and curriculums.
  • Ensures all learning activities are aligned with learning and performance objectives of the Data Protection Program. Monitors and evaluates learning activities and program effectiveness.
  • Ensures implementation of a strong Data Protection culture in partnership with stakeholders across various business lines.
  • Leads and drives a customer focused culture throughout the team to deepen client relationships and leverage broader Bank relationships, systems and knowledge.
  • Understands how the Bank’s risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day activities and decisions.
  • Creates an environment in which the team pursues effective and efficient operations of his/her respective areas in accordance with Scotiabank’s Values, its Code of Conduct and the Global Sales Principles, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational, compliance, AML/ATF/sanctions and conduct risk.

 

Education/Experience

 

  • Minimum 10+ years experience in a corporate change management and training role, preferably in a financial services (or regulated) environment, or a complex multi-national.
  • Good knowledge of multiple global banking businesses including related systems and procedures.
  • Knowledge and experience in data protection concepts and well-rounded broad knowledge of infrastructure platforms.
  • Sound business and technical acumen, with demonstrated agility in learning and ability to quickly become comfortable with unfamiliar businesses areas or of technologies. Ability to connect programs/projects to broader organizational goals and grasp the key performance drivers of business partners.
  • Proven ability to work both independently and within a team environment.
  • The incumbent must be diplomatic, flexible, with a positive, mature attitude, and the ability to remain calm under pressure and to deliver under tight timelines.
  • Must also be proactive and creative, with strong, proven ability to plan and manage competing priorities, as well as ability to recognize and appropriately handle sensitive and confidential information.
  • Excellent communication (both verbal and written). The ability to communicate confidently and clearly on conference calls, in meetings, via email, etc. at all levels of the organization including but not limited to Senior Executives is essential.
  • Excellent stakeholder management and influencing skills, capable of balancing multiple perspectives, effective at all levels up to senior executive.
  • Expert presentation, written and verbal communication skills.
