Job Purpose

The Director is responsible for providing strategic and operational support to the VP, Canadian Banking Compliance in the execution of the Global Compliance and Canadian Banking Compliance programs overall and across all businesses under the VP’s mandate. The Director also provides 2nd line compliance oversight of the Private Bank, and Bank of Nova Scotia Trust Company of Canada.


Key Accountabilities


Leadership Support – Provides strategic support to the VP leadership by:

  1. Supporting regular reporting to compliance and Canadian banking senior management.
  2. Providing advice to VP and Canadian Banking compliance partners on how to best improve the current model to address compliance risk.
  3. Supporting a consistent Canadian Banking Compliance issues management, risk assessment, and reporting processes across all businesses under the VP’s management.
  4. Provides strategic advice for the Canadian Banking Compliance portion of major projects within Scotiabank Global and Canadian Banking Compliance for all businesses under the VP’s management, as appropriate, as well as acts as the key Canadian Banking Compliance partner in other strategic projects. 


Compliance Risk Management – pursue effective and efficient operations of the Canadian Banking Compliance risk management program, including for the Trust and Private Banking Businesses:

  1. Understand how the Bank’s risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day activities and decisions.
  2. Lead and drive a customer focused culture to deepen client relationships and leverage broader Bank relationships, systems and knowledge.
  3. Oversee the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with regulatory compliance and conduct risk, including the Regulatory Compliance Risk Management Framework, and the Scotiabank Code of Conduct.
  4. Lead and manage the Canadian Banking Trust and Private Banking compliance operations in accordance with the RCM Framework, including the monitoring of developments, the maintenance and updating of policies, procedures and compliance systems, testing and monitoring programs, regular reporting to senior Compliance and business management and the timely escalation of material compliance concerns; provide expert advice and counsel to the business.
  5. Serve as the appointed Chief Compliance Officer (“CCO”) for the OSFI regulated Canadian Trust subsidiary of the Bank.
  6. Participate in major decision making in relation to client complaints, litigation and/or other dispute settlement, or where the claim may involve significant regulatory or reputational risk to the firm.
  7. Lead compliance assessments, reports, reviews and surveys for the Trusts and Private banking businesses and act as a compliance liaison, as necessary, for certain regulatory examinations or investigations.
  8. Keep abreast of new and changing legislation/regulation, changes to Scotiabank policies and procedures that impact Canadian Banking, and industry best practices; prepare impact assessments; make recommendations regarding risks and opportunities and participate in the implementation process.


Relationship Management – Develop and sustain key strategic alliances, partnerships and third party relationships to effectively meet our stakeholders’ needs by:

  1. Working closely with business executives within Canadian Banking, including management within Trust and Private Bank businesses.
  2. Working collaboratively with peers and counterparts across Canadian Banking and Global Compliance to share best practices, avoid silos and ensure consistency and alignment to the Enterprise Compliance Framework.
  3. Participating in internal/external meetings that will enhance Compliance and business strategic initiatives and project(s) completion.
  4. Take a leadership role at industry associations, where applicable, promote the interests of Scotiabank and its customers, advocate and promote public policy positions through industry submissions to governmental and regulatory bodies.


Leader and People Manager - Build and support a high performance environment and implement a people strategy that attracts, retains, develops and motivates the team by fostering an inclusive work environment

  1. Is an active and visible leader for the Canadian banking and global compliance teams overall and promotes employee engagement.
  2. Communicate vison/values/business strategy and managing succession and development planning for the team.



  • Degree in Business, Finance, Law, or relevant Social Science (e.g. Economics). 
  • Minimum of 8 years of relevant compliance experience in a large bank or similar. In addition,
  • Demonstrated success in a large complex matrix financial institution
  • Strong understanding of institutional compliance fundamentals relevant to the deposit, lending and wealth, including trusts and private banking, platforms.
  • Proven track record of managing successful regulatory compliance projects.
  • Knowledge of regulatory agencies, regimes and regulatory frameworks in Canada.
  • Proven leadership skills and strong influencer
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and a proven ability to develop and implement solutions to complex issues.
  • Ability to learn and adapt to rapidly changing regulatory and business environments.
  • Strong time and project management, research and analytical skillsets.
