Purpose
We are seeking a highly analytical and skilled Data Scientist to join our team. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in statistics, computer science, and programming, with experience in data analysis and machine learning. The Data Scientist will be responsible for designing and implementing data-driven solutions to solve both rule-based and AI business problems. Additionally, the candidate should have experience in applying machine learning techniques to transaction monitoring for anti-money laundering/anti-terrorist financing purposes.
Key Job Accountabilities
• Apply range of modeling techniques, from rule-based statistical models to AI and Machine learning, to develop and implement models for transaction alert generation and alert prioritization, in support of Scotiabank’s AML/ATF activity.
• Research and understand the latest advances in AML/ATF analytics and predictive models in order to improve data acquisition, modeling, implementation and tuning strategies. Test and analyze thresholds, ranges and solution configurations to improve the effectiveness of monitoring and screening solutions.
• Contribute to the development of optimal AML/ATF strategic alternatives by identifying and presenting opportunities for the effective deployment of analytics for AML program (eg, productive vs non-productive alerts, alerts per transaction, optimizing solution configurations and parameters)
• Communicate complex data findings and insights to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Champions a customer focused culture to deepen client relationships and leverage broader Bank relationships, systems and knowledge
• Understand how the Bank’s risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day activities and decisions. Assist the team in ensuring all procedures and practices are complied with regulatory and internal requirements
• Champions a high performance environment and implements a people strategy that attracts, retains, develops and motivates their team by fostering an inclusive work environment; communicating vison/values/business strategy and managing succession and development planning for the team.
Skills
• Experience with statistical modeling and data science methods (AI/ML); AML/ATF experience with wires, cheques, cash, capital markets data is a plus
• Experience programming in statistical languages such as Python, R
• Familiarity working with popular libraries for data science, machine learning, and visualization: such as Numpy, Pandas, Scikit-learn, Tensorflow/Pytorch/Keras, Matplotlib/Seaborn/ggplot2
• Experience with databases such as Oracle or SQL Server, as well as big data technologies such as Hadoop, Hive, Spark, or other distributed computing frameworks.
• Nice to have experience with deep learning frameworks such as TensorFlow, Keras, or PyTorch.
• General programming (e.g. C++, Java, Scala); shell scripting experience a plus.
• Experience with version control systems and workflows a plus.
• Nice to have experience with cloud-based data platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud.
• Strong communication (both oral and written) and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team environment
Education
• Bachelor’s degree or higher in science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM): statistics, data science, data analytics, artificial intelligence, computer science, computer engineering, financial modelling, etc.
