Purpose

Contributes to the overall success of the Internal Control International Banking (IB) team by ensuring processes and protocols are in place to mitigate risks of financial loss, regulatory fines, penalties or sanctions, litigation and damage to reputation of the Bank, while ensuring best practices are used, leveraging lessons learned across IB and applying them across our geographic footprint to address issues, which may be more systemic.

The Director, is responsible for the leading the design, operationalization and ongoing governance and sustainment of International Banking non-financial risk programs including, but not limited to RCSA, NIRA, KRIs, Risk Matrices, Operational Losses, Scenario Analysis, Operational Risk Events, Issues Management, Third Party Risk Management, Enhanced (PII) Monitoring, as well as the IB 1B Quality Assurance Testing Program.

 

What You’ll Do:

  •  Provides leadership, oversight, advisory and guidance for the non-financial risks programs in scope.
  • Leads and supports major multi-disciplinary non-financial risk (CORE) projects across International Banking.
  • Provides risk advice to business units in case of internal control breakdowns by providing guidance on action plans and escalating to relevant executives.
  • Provides subject matter expertise and collaboration to International Banking Business Lines in establishing appropriate internal controls, which support business plan growth, increase productivity, mitigate risk and provide a consistent customer experience.
  • Collaborates with both Business lines and District/Country resources, coordinating and providing oversight to Audit Findings and Internal Control Review remediation efforts as required; ensuring operational deficiencies are addressed and operational soundness is maintained. Proactive follow-up to ensure that commitments made are delivered on.
  • Oversees the ongoing monitoring, support and independent review to ensure effective and efficient risk assessment and adequate controls are in place within the supported countries.
  • Leads the implementation of the overall internal control management framework to ensure that all changes in structure are properly anchored in updated Job Descriptions, Evaluations, and the Operational Control Target Operating Model.
  • Facilitates the sharing of Internal Control review recommendations and Best Practices to ensure consistent application of key internal controls, which contribute to sustained improvement of risk key performance indicators across International Banking.
  • Supports the implementation and delivery of operational risk metrics and indicators to ensure adherence to the Country risk appetite.
  • Enables a stronger risk culture through ongoing coaching on risk and controls and training on the Operational Risk Framework and tools.
  • Understands how the Bank’s risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day activities and decisions.
  • Creates an environment in which their team pursues effective and efficient operations of their respective areas in accordance with Scotiabank’s Values, its Code of Conduct and the Global Sales Principles, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational, compliance, AML/ATF/sanctions and conduct risk.
  • Builds a high-performance environment and implements a people strategy that attracts, retains, develops and motivates their team by fostering an inclusive work environment and using a coaching mindset and behaviors communicating vison/values/business strategy; and managing succession and development planning for the team.
  • Other applicable duties as assigned.

 

 

What You'll Bring:

 

  •  Bachelor degree in Business Administration or a related discipline. MBA is preferred.
  • 10+ years of relevant Banking and financial services experience.
  • Strong understanding of regulations and non-financial risks impacting the Bank and the importance of key mitigating controls.
  • Strong relationship-building competencies to build/maintain productive relationships with key stakeholders and business partners.
  • Excellent verbal and written skills with the ability to effectively communicate with business partners at all levels of the Bank.
  • Proven leadership and time-management skills.
  • Excellent problem solving, critical thinking, and negotiating skills.
  • Expert knowledge of Microsoft PowerPoint, Excel, Word, and Visio.
  • Candidates must be willing to travel internationally periodically.
  • Fluency in English and Spanish required.
