Purpose of Job:
A non-client facing role that is accountable for the management of large number of investment portfolios for high net worth clients on a centralized basis. Ensuring asset mix and total return meet client’s short and long term income and investment growth goals; through the use of central models containing approved securities and the firm’s corporate investment asset mix strategy.
Liaising with Private Investment Client Portfolio Management teams in the field as necessary to deliver a seamless and efficient client experience by executing new account transition, managing cash requirements and ongoing portfolio management for portfolios adhering to the centralized models.
The incumbent will prepare communications and work with various departments on the production and dissemination of appropriate support material. They will also work closely with the Portfolio Managers in CIM in researching and preparing information in support of investment decisions.
Major Accountabilities:
1. Management of centralized investment portfolios for high net worth clients by:
- Performing accurate and timely execution of investment model changes at the security and asset mix level across a large base of clients
- Providing input related to the development of portfolio structuring along with the Portfolio Manager,
- Staying abreast of the reasons for the central security and asset mix models changes and connecting with the field Portfolio Manager where necessary to discuss affects to client’s portfolio and stated objectives
- Maintaining central models on the portfolio accounting system
- Maintaining a strong knowledge of our portfolio management and trading systems
2. Proactively manage and assess risk by:
- Staying abreast of capital market conditions that may affect clients’ portfolio
- Ensuring compliance and accuracy of trading activities
- Minimizing the Bank’s overall exposure to risk
- Maintaining client portfolios in accordance with established firm strategy for Central Portfolio Models and pools focusing on client’s risk appetite and alignment with clients’ financial goals, objectives and risk levels
- Maintaining awareness and ensuring compliance/adherence to all procedures, regulatory activities and guidelines including Privacy, Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorist Financing, FCAC, Know your Client, Occupational Health & Safety and Guidelines for Business Conduct
- Adhering to bank and firm standards, policies and business practices to ensure that Private Client Counsel is meeting the appropriate regulatory and compliance requirements as they relate to both new and existing accounts
- Escalating, documenting and reporting any unusual occurrences, suspicious or fraudulent activities, as per established procedures
3. Act as a centre of investment expertise for PIC field staff & internal partner groups by:
- Collaborating with other departments, such as the product group, Investment Policy and Research and providing subject matter expertise on central portfolio models
- Providing recommendations on portfolio structure and/or assisting local teams with appropriate mandates/objectives or models to meet a client’s circumstances, income needs, and return expectations
- Selecting and recommending securities in accordance with the firm's views and that fulfill clients' objectives
- Regularly monitoring portfolios and making changes as appropriate
4. Support Director & Portfolio Manager, with ongoing initiatives and process improvements by:
- Assisting with initiatives including technology projects and operational efficiency changes
- Assisting in the training of new and existing private client personnel in modeling and portfolio administration methods
5. Contribute to the effective functioning of the Centralized team by:
- Contributing to the effective and positive functioning of the Centralized Investment Management team and partners
- Fostering and developing a strong, positive team environment, driving employee empowerment, innovation and a high degree of engagement
- Building effective working relationships across the team and with various business line, internal and external stakeholders
- Maintaining a high level of client service and effectively resolving / escalating client issues as required
- Facilitating a culture of open and honest communication
- Actively participating and contributing to touchbases, team meetings and coaching sessions (if applicable)
- Encouraging the generation of new ideas and approaches
- Actively sharing knowledge and experience to enhance the development of all team members
- Developing and executing a meaningful employee development plan
- Acting as a mentor to junior colleagues and taking a leadership role on the team
Education/Work Experience/Designations
- Thorough investment management knowledge and experience as it relates to understanding economic and capital markets
- CSC+CIM (or its predecessor CIF)
- CFA Designation (Minimum Level 1)*
- Must meet the regulatory requirements to be registered with the appropriate securities commission
- University Degree (Business, Economics, Accounting, Finance)
- Minimum 3-5 years direct experience in discretionary investment management, with a solid understanding investment returns, potential risks, and tax implications
- Strong investment management know-how and depth of experience, as it relates to understanding economic and capital markets data in order to describe the firm’s investment strategy to partners and clients
- Strong relationship management skills
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Highly analytical
- Advanced knowledge of Excel, Mpower (and Access is a nice to have).
