The role
The Application Architect is a pivotal role within the Global Fraud Technology initiatives, responsible for leading the technical design and implementation of advanced solutions that enhance the organization's digital presence and operational efficiency. This role is crucial for ensuring that architecture decisions align with Fraud strategic goals and technical requirements, thereby driving innovation and excellence in application development and deployment.
Is this role right for you? In this role you will:
- Define, design and develop the detailed architecture for the application as required based on project requirements.
- Work closely with enterprise architecture, other solutions, application, data, security and infrastructure architects to ensure solutions design aligned with Bank’s standards, policies and best practices and follow Bank’s Architecture Review Board governance process.
- Provide thought leadership on reference architecture and design patterns, and develop roadmaps to simplify system integrations
- Ensure all architecture documents are kept up to date as the application evolves
- Maintain a sharp focus on system reliability and ensure overall architecture of the application can gracefully handle upstream and downstream system failures.
- Provide estimation of the work effort required to deliver the architecture solution
- Coach and mentor engineers
- Build and maintain solid, professional, working relationships with peers within the portfolio and business lines.
- Communicating effectively across diverse audiences, departments and levels
- Identify areas of technical debt and create strategies to prioritize and eliminate it.
- Work on own initiative without direction for most activities

- Actively pursues effective and efficient operations of his/her respective areas in accordance with Scotiabank’s Values, its Code of Conduct and the Global Sales Principles, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational, compliance, AML/ATF/sanctions and conduct risk.
Do you have the skills that will enable you to succeed in this role?
We’d love to work with you if you have:
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering or related discipline
- 7+ years of software engineering industry experience.
- 5+ years of experience in architecture design processes, creating reference architectures and architecture artifacts that guide design decisions related to applications, data, integration and infrastructure.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and influencing skills with the ability to build and foster relationships with business partners, project stakeholders, strategic technology partners and external vendors.
Cloud Computing:
- Extensive experience with cloud platforms, particularly Google Cloud Platform (GCP), including managing resources and optimizing costs.
- Data processing tools/concepts such as Pub/Sub, Dataflows, Big Query, Cloud Storage, Kafka, MongoDB, Apache Flink.
- Hands-on experience in the system analysis, design, architecture of complex, multi-tier development & production environments involving:
- Microservices design
- Event driven architecture
- ETL and data solutions
- Domain driven design techniques
- Cloud platforms deployment
- System resiliency engineering
- Agile practices applied to a product team
Data Management:
- Expertise in managing large-scale data ingestion, storage, and processing, including real-time and batch processing.
Security:
- Strong understanding of data security protocols, including encryption and tokenization.
- Experience ensuring compliance with security standards, including PCI compliance for data handling.
Project Management:
- Demonstrated ability to manage complex migration and deployment projects.
- Proven experience leading technical sessions and making architecture decisions.
Collaboration:
- Experience working with diverse teams, including analytics, cloud operations, and cybersecurity.
- Excellent communication skills to articulate technical concepts and collaborate with cross-functional teams.
Documentation:
- Strong background in maintaining detailed documentation of technical decisions and project plans.
- Familiarity with fraud detection and prevention systems and technologies.
