Job Purpose


The Senior Portfolio Director is responsible for building strategic relationships with IT and the Business for Canadian Banking Technology (CBT).  The individual will be directly accountable for the development and management of a portfolio of projects that support a group of products and services.  This role will act as the single point of contact for the business group managers; 


  • Responsible for ensuring the planning, prioritization, business cases and budgets are in support of the business strategy
  • Work with resource managers to balance the workloads as appropriate, as well as ensuring that work adheres to established standards, processes and best practices
  • Actively seek opportunities to scale and expand existing solutions, recommend courses of actions and develop strategies to maximize the efficiency of the program delivery function for the Department and the Division


Key Accountabilities


  • Partner with Business Heads and Technology Executives to develop multi-year strategic plans and business cases for products, in consultation with the Strategic Portfolio Office
  • Establish and maintain a collaborative relationship with the business and the owners of the application portfolio including; (LOB Heads, Product and Channels, Back Office & Centralized Accounting Units, Infrastructure, Network, Security, Strategic Portfolio Office, Development Heads, Risk and Compliance, etc.
  • Provide advice and counsel to the leadership team regarding project financials, risks, and opportunities to reduce structural costs
  • Develop planning and brainstorming sessions for new and existing products in the portfolio
  • Proactively collaborate with other members of the management team and Partners to bring new ideas, services and thought leadership to both the Delivery Team and the Business Partners
  • Lead and manage the implementation of strategic reviews and associated tactics
  • Proactively identify short and long term product improvements, bring forward innovative ideas and opportunities aligned to the Canadian Banking Technology Portfolio
  • Seek input and obtain buy-in to business plans with internal partners to ensure support for priorities 
  • Responsible for building strong relationships with external Vendors and Partners that may include (IBM, Deloitte, Tech Mahindra Credit Bureau agencies, etc.)  Ensures accountability for the development and management of a portfolio
  • Ensure compliance with policies, standards, guidelines and controls by applying the policies and controls consistently, so employees understand what to expect
  • Jointly foster talent management of employees through the resource manager to provide effective coaching and development planning discussions and by taking an active role in addressing gaps
  • Facilitate an environment of open and honest communication; encourage the generation of new ideas and approaches


Functional Competencies


  • Strong negotiation and management/leadership skills with clear results orientation to lead and motivate a team
  • Expert negotiation skills to influence others of preferred options or alternatives where distinct differences of opinion or approach exist
  • Strong ability to apply analytical and innovative approaches to complex problems
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills to prepare and present material to an executive audience. Positive, flexible, open-minded approach towards work assignments
  • Good analytical, troubleshooting skills and proven ability to discern critical from minor problems




  • Strong IT background and Technology Strategy Experience
  • Demonstrated people management and running matrixed teams
  • Some background in Product Development, strategic planning, sufficient to identify, develop and implement approved initiatives
  • Demonstrated experience in taking initiative to build and foster positive relationships with business clients and team members
  • 15+ years of demonstrated experience managing and providing leadership to complex programs/projects
  • ITIL v3 Foundation Certification – Nice to have
  • Post-Secondary education in Business Administration, Commerce and/or Sciences
  • Systems & Methodologies
