Leads and oversees the Securitization, Treasury and Loan Accounting team in Tangerine Finance Department / Canadian Banking Finance in Canada ensuring business strategies, plans and initiatives are executed / delivered in compliance with governing regulations, internal policies, and procedures. The Senior Manager Treasury Operations and Loan and Securitization Accounting will be responsible for all aspects of the Bank’s treasury operations and for overseeing the end-to-end accounting for the Bank’s loan portfolio which currently includes residential mortgages, home equity lines of credit, unsecured term loans, unsecured lines of credit and credit cards. The incumbent will also be responsible for ensuring current and ongoing compliance with Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) NHA MBS guidelines. The Senior Manager leads a team of 6 and reports directly to the Director Financial Accounting and Operations.

Treasury Operations

  • Manage the process for setting the foreign exchange rate at which the Bank’s clients can buy/sell Canadian and U.S. dollars from the Bank.
  • Oversee the Bank’s collateral management process ensuring that the Bank has collected and posted adequate collateral at all times.
  • Maintain the Integra-T System and ensure all the trades and securitization deals are entered and appropriately updated as and when required.
  • Manage the Bank’s cash and ensure a strong system of internal controls prevails over the Bank’s trade settlement and cash movement activities.
  • Supervise the production of daily and monthly treasury reporting to regulators and parent bank.
  • Responsible for maintaining a healthy relationship with various vendors (Custodian, Software vendors, trade counterparties) and regulators (primarily CMHC).

Loan Accounting

  • Develop accounting policies to account for the Bank’s loan and securitization portfolios.
  • Monitor the external environment to identify and implement changes to the IFRS accounting standards that govern the accounting for the Bank’s loan and securitization portfolios.
  • Record all transactions related to the Bank’s loan and securitization portfolios (month-end, quarter-end, and year- end general ledger close).
  • Ensure appropriate controls exist over the accounting for the Bank’s loan and securitization portfolios.
  • Analyze the performance of the individual products within the Bank’s loan portfolio.
  • Provide information to external auditors for the Bank’s loan and securitization portfolios.
  • Maintain the chart of accounts related to the loan and securitization portfolios.
  • Advise the business on the accounting and performance implications stemming from modifications to the terms and conditions of the existing loan products or from the launch of new loan products.
  • Account for the bank’s credit loss allowances for all lending products. Ensure allowances are adequate and accounting for impairments is in compliance with IFRS 9.
  • Prepare and present monthly analysis and results, key performance metrics and commentary for various loan products.
  • Maintain the interfaces between the general ledger and the various loan systems and sources of data.
  • Prepare various notes to the financial statements related to loan and securitization accounting disclosures.

 

Credit Card Accounting

  • Manage all aspects of the month-end, quarter-end, and year-end accounting as pertaining to the Bank’s credit card offerings. This includes, but is not limited to, fee revenue accounting; loyalty program accounting; accounting, tracking, reconciliation and reporting of credit card revenue and expenses; manage external and internal auditor queries.
  • Responsible for overseeing the timely reconciliation of all general ledger accounts related to the credit card product.
  • Review all of the finance department’s credit card policies, procedures, processes to ensure they are updated dynamically for all changes effected in the business environment; product features and/or accounting/regulatory standards.
  • Manage the relationship and communications with the external finance vendors related to the credit card product offering.

Securitization

  • Establish and maintain procedures to implement the issuance, servicing, and monitoring of NHA Mortgage-Backed Securities.
  • Manage the day-to-day Accounting and Administration activities of both Tangerine and White Label NHA NBS pools. This includes reconciliation of trust liability GL’s, excess spread calculations, approving CMHC 2840 reports and booking month end accounting entries.
  • Manage the monthly funds transfer to Computershare and trust bank administration as per CMHC guidelines.
  • Verify the sales of NHA MBS into the Principal/Interest reinvestment account and ensure the pool split table is up-to- date and mid-month settlement entries are processed accurately.
  • Lead the new securitization of the bank originated mortgages and portfolio insurance program.
  • Implement profitability analysis and reporting for securitization and portfolio insurance activities.
  • Coordinate the annual specified procedure audit.

Accounting Operations

  • Ensure all Accounting Operations processes are appropriately controlled, documented, and executed in accordance with defined procedures.
  • Manage the fixed asset accounting and capitalization processes and act as key stakeholder for managing banking relationships.
  • Manage the integration of data from various corporate systems (i.e., TSYS, RBC, ABM, EDC, and EMT) to Peoplesoft, monitor and address data integrity issues.

Team Management

  • Coach and develop 6 accounting staff and conduct regular performance reviews.
  • Set annual goals and milestones and monitor progress towards key objectives for the entire team.
  • Ensure adequate back-up and cross- training to enable seamless continuity of operations in the event of staff sickness, holiday, or turnover.

Others

  • Maintain Finance Access database for loan portfolio and coordinate with PMO/ IT on updates of Database in order to meet information requirement from business partners.
  • Manage business relationships with third party lending partners
  • Assist with implementation of appropriate operational and accounting infrastructure.
  • Develop and/or update analytical financial modules as required.
  • Liaise with Internal and external Auditors.
  • Coordinate the activities of the accounting team and close the monthly GL.
  • Responsible for maintaining and updating the entire financial statement close process narrative and SOX controls. Responsible for understanding and complying with the Regulatory Compliance Framework including the Anti-Money Laundering/Anti-Terrorist Financing and Sanctions Policy and all AML related policies, procedures, and controls within the department.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • University Degree in Finance or Business Administration
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in the financial service industry
  • CPA, CA or CGA or a Professional Accounting Designation
  • Thorough knowledge of mortgages, securitization structures, unsecured lending, and credit card accounting/operations
  • In-depth understanding of IFRS conceptual framework, expertise in Accounting Standards of Financial Instruments, Loan Impairment and Provisions
  • In-depth understanding of financial instruments and valuation methods
  • Sound knowledge of provincial and federal banking compliance regulations
  • Exceptionally strong analytical skills
  • Advanced MS Excel skills
  • Ability to learn to gather information from Enterprise Data Warehouse
  • Ability to think clearly and in a very organized/systematic manner
  • Able to express/explain very complex situations/items in a very easy to understand manner ideally with the help of drawings and simple flowcharts
  • Able to make well-reasoned and thought-out decisions
  • Ability to research and account for complex transactions
  • Able to work independently and exercise good professional judgment
  • Exceptionally strong verbal and written communication skills with a proven ability to summarize accurately and adequately
