In this role as Deputy Comptroller based in Houston, you will be primarily responsible for the ongoing maintenance of the financial and regulatory books and records for Houston Branch and Scotia Holdings (US) Inc. (SHUSI). Responsibilities will include preparation and review of regulatory reports that are submitted to the Federal Reserve Bank and various regulatory authorities to ensure their correctness, consistency and timely submission. The position requires intensive involvement in special projects relating to the bank’s regulatory reporting and financial reporting initiatives. You will assist the Head of Regulatory Reporting in Houston and NY on other regulatory matters. You will lead and oversee the Finance department in Houston Branch U.S. ensuring business strategies, plans and initiatives are executed / delivered in compliance with governing regulations, internal policies and procedures.

Is this role right for you? You will be responsible for:

  • Leading and driving a customer focused culture throughout their team to deepen client relationships and leverage broader Bank relationships, systems and knowledge
  • Preparation and review of all Federal & other regulatory reports prepared by Houston Finance team to ensure the accuracy and in compliance with regulatory reporting instructions for the respective reports
  • Month end GL closing, review balance sheet reconciliation and substantiations for multiple key transits and provide signoffs
  • Implementing all internal controls in the process to ensure compliance with internal regulatory reporting policies and procedures
  • Acting as primary contacts / liaise with various internal audit team and QA team for various audits and reviews
  • Identifying, escalating and remediating data quality enhancements
  • Supervise Accounts Payable and Expense Management function for Houston Branch
  • Actively participate various projects and lead from Houston Finance perspective
  • Understand how the Bank’s risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day activities and decisions
  • Creates an environment in which his/her team pursues effective and efficient operations of his/her respective areas in accordance with Scotiabank’s Values, its Code of Conduct and the Global Sales Principles, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational, compliance, AML/ATF/sanctions and conduct risk

Do you have the skills you need to succeed? We'd love to work with you, if you have:

  • A minimum of 7 - 10 years’ experience in Financial Reporting, Accounting, Regulatory Reporting or equivalent functions
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required
  • Strong regulatory & financial reporting knowledge prevalent in banking/financial institutions
  • Knowledge of:
    • U.S. GAAP and IFRS including recent pronouncements
    • Axiom (preferred)
    • FBO and IHC requirements (preferred)
  • The ability to work effectively in a dynamical environment and keep open mind to the changes and rising bar
  • Strong leadership and teamwork spirit
