Purpose:

 

  • Leading and supporting U.S. Loan Review (USLR) team members in conduct of target reviews; continuous monitoring reviews and reporting.
  • Performing independent, objective and timely assessment of the U.S. Loan non-retail credit portfolio borrower relationships, credit risk ratings and credit risk controls.
  • Monitoring designated U.S. wholesale portfolio industry sectors.
  • Performing ancillary duties in support of USLR

 

Key Accountability:

 

  • Evaluate activities of lending transactions and Banking and Global Risk Management personnel to ensure compliance with risk ratings, policies, approvals, monitoring and risk assessments.    
  • Provide management with objective assessment of the assigned sector of the U.S. non-retail loan portfolio and ensuring emerging risks are identified and highlighted.
  • Assist with preparation, scoping, training and report writing for reviews in which they participate.
  • Assist the Director, USLR in executing the US Loan Review plan, providing financial and regulatory reporting and meeting regulatory requirements.
  • Provide insights and advisory collaboration to Global Banking and Markets and Global Risk Management on risk identification, credit risk management processes and regulatory guidance.
  • Interface with Internal Audit (U.S. & Toronto) as appropriate with respect to U.S. Loan reviews/audits, operations and administrative functions of USLR.
  • Understand how the Bank’s risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day activities and decisions.
  • Supports an environment in which his/her team pursues effective and efficient operations of his/her respective areas, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational risk, regulatory compliance risk, AML/ATF risk and conduct risk, including but not limited to responsibilities under the Operational Risk Management Framework, Regulatory Compliance Risk Management Framework, AML/ATF Global Handbook and the Guidelines for Business Conduct.

 

Education & Experience:

 

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience with post graduate degree and/or CFA preferable.
  • Formal (bank, rating or bank regulatory agency, consulting, etc.) including ability to perform fundamental and comprehensive financial analysis of historical and projected financial statements.
  • Familiarity with risk based auditing standards, techniques and methodologies, a plus.
  • Minimum 4 years of experience (bank, rating agency, consulting, etc.) with credit experience across a variety of industries and credit structures, a plus.
  • Knowledge of U.S. regulatory environment and emerging risks.
  • Computer proficiency (MS Office) and ability to acclimate to Scotiabank proprietary systems.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability and willingness to articulate well supported credit opinions, including those divergent from banking and credit officers/staff.
  • Collaborative approach to work with USLR team and with banking and credit officers/staff.
  • Capacity to manage competing project priorities and a diverse workload.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, strong work ethic, and self-motivated.
  • Ability to accept accountability and demonstrate initiative.
