The candidate will be a core member of the U.S. Legal Department by providing support to the Office’s litigation functions. 

 

With respect to supporting the Office’s litigation function, the candidate will assist in the following three areas: (1) support counsel in managing new and ongoing litigation and regulatory inquiries and investigations; (2) responding to subpoenas and other legal process; (3) managing litigation group processes.  

 

 

 

Is this role right for you? You will be responsible for:

 

  • Managing litigation and regulatory matters
    • Reviewing and doing first draft of legal filings, including discovery responses, legal hold notices, custodian lists;
    • Partnering with Scotiabank’s litigation support teams and outside counsel with respect to preservation, review, and production of documents, including electronically stored information (“ESI”);
    • Drafting and providing updates and reports as to ongoing litigation and regulatory matters;
    • Assisting with fact gathering and investigations, as needed;
    • Maintaining and organizing litigation files;
    • Maintaining calendar of deadlines for matters.
  • Responding to subpoenas and other types of legal inquiries, process and notices;
  • Managing litigation group processes
    • Reviewing and processing legal invoices;
    • Setting up new matters in Legal Tracker;
    • Coordinating Third Party Risk Management processes;
    • Reviewing and doing first draft of engagement letters

The candidate must have experience assisting with the litigation and regulatory matters.  Experience with assisting counsel on allphases of complex civil, or employment litigations and/or regulatory and/or employment investigations, in particular experience with e-discovery..  Minimum three years legal assistant experience, preferably from a law firm, large organization or financial institution.

 

Competencies and Skills:

  • 4 year degree
  • Notary (preferred)
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Professional, polished and confident demeanor
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office
  • Proficiency with Relativity, Sharepoint, and/or LegalTracker preferred.
  • Ability to understand, interpret and simplify legal terminology and regulations
  • Demonstrated sound judgment skills in order to balance and deal with multiple issues and priorities
  • Be comfortable with areas where there is no clear answer. In this respect, the incumbent must have superior problem-solving skills to present a reasoned, defensible response
  • Should be able to work with a large volume of enquiries and be able to prioritize issues
  • Should be self-motivated and work with minimal direction
  • Should be able to identify issues that require escalation and to manage the escalation process
  • Able to work independently
