Purpose: The US Sponsors team is a newly formed US sponsor coverage group that is created on the heels of Scotiabank’s ambitions to grow its leveraged finance product and overall investment bank. 

The candidate will be responsible for supporting deal execution across industries and products as well as relationship management for a broad range of Sponsors. The work will entail financial modeling, pitch book preparations, credit memo support and generally supporting the group. The candidate will work closely with the the Directors and MDs in the group. The candidate will contribute to the overall success of the team ensuring specific individual goals, plans, and initiatives are executed / delivered in support of the team’s business strategies and objectives. Ensure all activities conducted are in compliance with governing regulations, internal policies and procedures.


What You’ll Do 

  • Champion a client centric focused culture to deepen client relationships and leverage broader Bank relationships, systems, and knowledge to deliver solutions that Scotiabank can provide within the financial sponsor space including private equity, infrastructure, real asset, private credit and family office managers. Role will also include relationship management and cross collaboration including:
    • Coordinating with other groups within Global Banking & Markets (“GBM”), such as banking coverage across Corporate & Investment Banking (“CIB”) globally, credit and business risk, underwriting / execution, and Capital Markets (Securitization, DCM, ECM, Structured Credit, FX and Rates).
    • Developing and maintaining effective industry relationships with legal counsel, external parties, clients (in collaboration with senior coverage officers)
  • The day-to-day responsibilities include the following:
    • Assist the underwriting and approval process for sponsor-backed transactions at the fund and portfolio/asset level to drive fee-generating revenues such as M&A, LBO and refinancing via collaboration with CIB coverage teams and Non-Investment Grade Finance team.
    • Participate in comprehensive due diligence on target companies including financial modelling, business strategy, market environment and competitive landscape.
    • Coordinate with various internal product partners to deliver holistic capabilities to clients
    • Collect, validate and consolidate Bank-wide profitability and exposure data related to financial sponsors, including coordination with sponsor coverage team in UK, Canada, Asia and LATAMTrack market conditions and financial news, with a focus on sponsor transactions, and summarizing data in an easy to read format
    • Maintain database of client information, deal flow and financial sponsor activity
    • Maintain an internal log of client pitches, discussions, conversations
    • Update the CRM with relevant information periodically
    • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and internal compliance policies
    • Helpdrive the underwriting and approval process for sponsor-backed financings, with responsibility for cash flow modeling (cases with multiple drivers), and credit interactions
    • Perform comprehensive financial statement analysis and creating and maintaining models, with a focus on LBO cash flow modeling
    • Create high-quality pitch books and presentation materials to support client discussions around new business opportunities
    • Assist senior coverage bankers in presenting ideas to internal and external stakeholders
    • Applying product and capital markets knowledge to help clients achieve their financial objectives
    • Actively contribute to a high performance and inclusive work environment

 

What You’ll Bring 

  • 1-2 years’ work experience in Investment Banking, preferably sponsor coverage, leveraged finance, or M&A experience 
  • Bachelors or Masters Degree 
  • Working experience with financial modelling, pitch book presentations 
  • Strong credit, structuring and financial analysis skills 
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills 
  • Excellent command of Microsoft Suite, with an emphasis on Excel and PowerPoint 
  • Excellent command of industry standard market data sources, such as Credit Sights, LCD News, Bloomberg, and other sources 
  • A high level of attention to detail 
  • A high level of energy and a keen desire to learn new concepts, build a platform, and enhance banking skillset 
  • The ability to obtain and maintain required FINRA registration and licensing appropriate to your functions and responsibilities
