The Finance team at Scotiabank growing, and are currently seeking a Director, Data & Controls! Data & Controls go hand-in-hand. Finance processes are at the end of the information flow, and the Head of this domain will drive focus both within Finance as well as influencing other departments external to Finance, to identify risk and instill rigor and discipline in their processes. The prime objective of this role is to drive change that enhances the quality of GBM Finance products and services through the lens of data, secure compliance with Finance, GBM and Enterprise data standards and align on best practice, design and implement solutions that secure the quality of data, and support the core change capabilities in sourcing, control, governance of data. Is this role right for you? You will be responsible for:

 

  • Working with stakeholders across all functions to establish a control framework that supports the methodical capture of front-to-back process and data flows, by product and system.
    • Identify the control risks inherent in the flow
    • Assess the form and quality of existing controls
  • Making recommendations to strengthen and/or establish controls where required, drawing on a range of options to match to the type of risk, including
    • Technical
    • Accounting
    • Reconciliations
    • Data Quality monitoring
  • Working with 1B, internal and external audit to align on standards and ensure that control design is risk relevant and effective.
  • Driving a Data focus in the strategic initiatives (e.g. HAMMER, LoanIQ and future programs) to realize their objectives, bringing senior stakeholder consensus  on topics including
    • Intercompany controls
    • Cash management and cash controls
    • Inter-system integrity
  • Ensuring that the control monitoring, escalation and remediation procedures are an established feature  of an operating model and globally consistent
  • Continuing to evolve the COBRA initiative to strengthen the close process
  • Expanding the focus from GL attestation to broader Data attestation
  • Work with Data Governance Office to deploy and evolve the suite of data management tools and initiatives to secure quality data for Financial accounting and reporting.
  • Evolving and maintain key aspects of our Data Governance, including Critical Data Element population, Data Quality management, Lineage - in line with best practice and regulatory expectations
  • Evolving the forward-looking data requirements for MIS and analytics in support of Business demand

 

Day to day activities include:

 

  • Cataloing front-to-back controls,  from source to Finance reporting.  Identify gaps, weaknesses, and opportunities for optimization.  Consult with QAIC, internal audit and Finance partners on design effectiveness
  • Designing and implement effective and practical data quality controls - and tools to embed these in the Finance ecosystem.
  • Promoting a culture of accountability for data and control in Finance.  Champion Finance data standards with providers of data to Finance and hold them accountable for quality and effective delivery
  • Understanding and assist in the definition of the measures of quality across the various lenses of reporting
  • Driving the initiation of investment in data monitoring and control tooling.  Partner with Data Office, upstream providers and technology to implement
  • Maintaining the universe of Finance data elements, understanding their usage criticality and alignment with other data domains
  • Reviewing data lineage in compliance with Data Office standards and promote its development as a practical diagnostic tool

 

Do you have the skills you need to succeed? We'd love to work with you, if you have:

 

  • A strong background in Product or Financial control.  Audit background would be a plus.
  • Knowledge of banking and capital markets product s and the typical systems and front-to-back information flow
  • Strong, persistent character, who can influence behavior and drive change beyond the Finance organization
  • Solid grounding in the modern “Data management” concepts.  Doesn’t need to be a Data scientist – can leverage DGO – but understands how to practically extract benefits of  techniques such as lineage, data quality measurement, governance etc
  • Exposure to delivering Change in large organizations with a multi-region footprint.
