Purpose
Senior member of the Large Loans Originations team within Commercial Real Estate Finance (CREF). CREF provides secured debt financings to public corporations, private equity groups, REITS, and asset managers etc. Main responsibility is to source, originate, structure, and close commercial real estate financings across a range of property types for CREF’s standalone CMBS business as well as for the bank’s balance sheet. This position will work closely with the capital markets desk, credit risk management, loan transaction management, securitization bankers, loan closing team, asset managers and other important stakeholders. Plans and ensures initiatives are executed / delivered in compliance with governing regulations, internal policies, and procedures.
What You’ll Do
- Leads and drives a customer focused culture throughout the team to deepen client relationships and leverage broader Bank relationships, systems, and knowledge. Acts as a role model for the team and an ambassador of the Bank’s values.
- Prescreen opportunities prior to the sizing, underwriting and documentation process.
- Solicit new business: source and originate CRE loans in accordance with market standards and the Bank’s origination guidelines and risk parameters.
- Coordinate the processing and closing of approved loans and extensions in compliance with the Bank’s lending policies and procedures.
- Oversee a deal origination team consisting of associates and analysts to prepare and present lending packages for internal credit approval and rating agency/ investor analysis.
- Lead in negotiating loan terms and conditions with borrowers working to achieve optimal terms for both the client and the bank; provide independent and objective in-depth analysis of credit quality for complex commercial real estate loans to present a financing request to senior management, loan approval committee and credit risk for approval; use credit skills to identify strengths and weaknesses of a transaction and create structural features to mitigate risks.
- Provide leadership, mentorship, and support to junior CREF team members.
- Partners with REGAL Corporate Banking on business strategy, loan origination and client coverage efforts across commercial mortgage market participants.
- Understand how the Bank’s risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day activities and decisions.
- Creates an environment in which his/her team pursues effective and efficient operations of his/her respective areas in accordance with Scotiabank’s Values, its Code of Conduct, and the Global Sales Principles, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational, compliance, AML/ATF/sanctions and conduct risk.

What You'll Bring
- Significant experience in CRE financings
- Work Experience: 8+ years experience in commercial real estate financing
- BA/BS degree in finance, economics, real estate, or related discipline preferred
- Strong valuation, analytical and problem-solving skills
- Exceptional interpersonal, communication and presentation skills
