Position:  Associate, Derivative Products Group, Global Banking & Markets


New York. Derivative Products Group (“DPDG”) is part of Global Fixed Income Origination Group. DPG is responsible for advising BNS’ US Corporate Lending Clients on the topics of Linear and Non-Linear Interest Rate and Cross Currency Swap Derivative Solutions



Contributes to the overall success of the Derivative Products Group (DPG) in the United States ensuring specific individual goals, plans, initiatives are executed / delivered in support of the team’s business strategies and objectives. Ensures all activities are conducted in compliance with governing regulations, internal policies and procedures.



  • Champions a customer focused culture to deepen client relationships and leverage broader Bank relationships, systems and knowledge.
  • Assists in the research, analysis, and support to develop creative risk management solution packages for the team’s corporate client base by using OTC proprietary derivative products (currency and interest rate hedging tools)
  • Prepares hedging solutions for clients and derivative pricing (initially in a support role) using advanced proprietary pricing models, and financial analysis, in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, often under tight time-constraints and competitive pressure
  • Effectively communicates and liaises with internal and external stakeholders (Investment Banking, Capital Markets, Legal, Compliance, Trading, Global Wholesale Services, Technology Applications Group, etc.) to help provide comprehensive risk management solutions to DPG's clients
  • Takes ownership for time-sensitive, and potentially critical analysis/presentations to meet client's needs/requirements
  • Assists in planning and creation of presentation material to potential/existing clients in an effort to promote individual and group ideas
  • Understand how the Bank’s risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day activities and decisions.
  • Actively pursues effective and efficient operations of his/her respective areas in accordance with Scotiabank’s Values, its Code of Conduct and the Global Sales Principles, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational, compliance, AML/ATF/sanctions and conduct risk.

Education / Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in a technical field (preferably science, finance, or mathematics) required and strong preference towards Masters' degree in similar, or more quantitative, field
  • 3-4 years of industry experience in the Capital Markets, Interest Rate Derivatives
  • Strong technical skills - experience with Scotiabank systems (K2, Algo Credit, Peak, Sentry, ION, RiskWatch) as well as proficient knowledge of third-party systems (Bloomberg, Excel, Access and VBA) is highly desirable
  • Thorough quantitative skills - strong ability to quantify risks associated with derivatives transactions (credit, market, operational, etc.), perform sensitivity/stress testing analysis, and develop stand-alone financial models
  • A sound understanding of the capital markets business is necessary, as is a client-centric approach to the role. The international scope of the business, together with the multiplicity of stakeholders, will require work outside of traditional business hours from time to time.
  • Familiarity of regulatory and industry initiatives (including Credit Value Adjustment (CVA), Basel Ill, CSN funding impacts, etc.) and their respective implications on OTC derivatives market is very helpful
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills are critical to the role. Interaction with internal and external contacts includes GBM senior management, trading and marketing desks, corporate bankers, risk management, legal counsel, financial engineering, back office, clients and industry players.
  • Must be able to operate effectively within an exceptionally stressful environment with changing priorities and tight time frames which are closely scrutinized by Senior members of Global Capital Markets
  • The position requires strong business acumen, sound judgment and critical thinking skills. The incumbent must be an action-oriented and self-motivated multi-tasker who possesses strong relationship management skills. It is critical that the incumbent be equally adept at both strategizing and implementing process change
