Leads and oversees Commercial Credit Risk in Quebec ensuring business strategies, plans and initiatives are executed / delivered in compliance with governing regulations, internal policies and procedures for Quebec’s Commercial Mid-Market and National Accounts.  The Head of Credit Risk Quebec ensures the Commercial Bank's loan portfolio is efficiently maintained at an acceptable level of risk and loan losses are minimized.  The incumbent adjudicates credit requests up to limits; makes sound recommendations on larger loans and ensures the loan portfolio is managed effectively and in adherence to Bank policy and standards.

  • Leads and drives a customer focused culture throughout their team to deepen client relationships and leverage broader Bank relationships, systems and knowledge.
  • Leads a team of adjudicators, contributes to the profitable growth and quality of the Quebec’s Commercial Credit portfolio, ensuring the portfolio is efficiently maintained at an acceptable level of risk. Ensure portfolio performance aligns with risk appetite through strong credit adjudication, robust controls, and proactive risk management.
  • Provides objective oversight and effective challenge, optimize capital, monitor emerging risks, and collaborate with business lines to shape strategic initiatives.  Ensures credit applications are adjudicated promptly, within the Bank’s risk selection parameters.
  • Ensures maintenance of Quebec Commercial Credit Risk, by overseeing the portfolio quality, monitoring trends in risk rating migration, NAL formations, overdue reporting, rating refreshes and annual reviews, etc. Identifies problems and initiates appropriate corrective action.
  • Leads mid-market and national accounts team and is responsible for the overall turnaround times, staffing levels, etc. Provides direct reports with coaching, direction, and guidance on credit matters when required. Has direct involvement with Banking Group Leads, AGLs, SBB and SPP  Banking groups concerning credit transaction and training issues as necessary.  Provide guidance on credit matters and collaborate with Banking Market VPs and Regional Credit Directors on transactions and training as necessary.
  • Manages the Partnership with Banking.  Build strong relationships with Commercial, Professional, and Private Banking to maintain open communication and ensure service excellence.  Negotiate credit terms, provide proactive effective challenge in deal forums, and restructure proposals into bankable solutions to support sound risk selection and strategic outcomes.  Provides guidance to Banking in the preparation and structuring of credit proposals.
  • Foster future leaders by strengthening adjudication capabilities and enhancing core leadership attributes across the team.
  • Perform other duties requiring a high level of confidentiality, including but not limited to: Handling sensitive information and documents with discretion; Supporting strategic initiatives or special projects/adhoc assignments as directed by the VP or SVP; Coordinating confidential communications and ensuring secure data management.
  • Understand how the Bank’s risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day activities and decisions.

Do you have the skills that will enable you to succeed in this role? - We'd love to work with you if you have:

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in financial analysis or credit adjudication.
  • Minimum Post Secondary Education completed in business or related area, and preferably a Masters degree.
  • Deep understanding of Commercial Banking and the Bank’s credit policies and procedures
  • Expert skills in financial analysis and accounting, risk assessment and developing creative financing proposals demonstrating sound credit judgement.
  • Expert understanding of security documentation, legal ramifications and remedies
  • Strong leadership skills to lead a team of adjudicators and credit officers.  
  • Strong understanding of mid-market and national accounts to make credit decisions and must also be attentive to local economic trends within the Quebec market.
  • Must be bilingual (English/French) with excellent communication skills (written and oral).
  • Ability to make decisions, frequently in the fact of uncertainty, and clearly communicate rationale for decisions

In addition to French, the successful candidate must also have sufficient knowledge of English, as the work involves interacting and collaborating regularly with groups and individuals based in Toronto, as well as constantly interacting with other people, including clients, who speak English, locally and elsewhere.
