Product Design, Director 

 

Purpose

Leads and oversees Product Design in International Bnaking ensuring business strategies, plans and initiatives are executed / delivered in compliance with governing regulations, internal policies and procedures.

 

Accountabilities

  • Leads and drives a customer focused culture throughout their team to deepen client relationships and leverage broader Bank relationships, systems and knowledge.
  • Influence the design decisions for banking digital experiences that touch millions of our customers every day across our IB footprint.
  • Understand our customers motivations and needs, encouraging teams to leverage rigorous design research and usability principles.
  • Consider customers interactions and journeys and act as an advocate for their constant improvement identifying and encouraging the utilization of inclusive design principles and implementation. Driving scale and reuse.
  • Practice empathy and the ability to actively listen and consider other people’s points of view.
  • Be a driver of the strategy, vision, and design of Scotiabank’s world class digital experiences across journeys.
  • Anticipate problems, challenges, and opportunities to formulate comprehensive responses to difficult questions, driving decision making regarding change and growth.
  • Leverage existing communication channels with key stakeholders across the Bank (both within and outside of Scotia Digital) to inform, build relationships, inspire confidence, and influence decisions.
  • Support and champion the execution of the Bank’s leadership strategy and view development of self and others as a business priority.
  • You will support and foster the growth of a thriving Design Community of Practice based on the principles of Inclusivity and collaboration, that is dedicated to attracting and develop key talent and emerging leaders within IB and local markets.
  • Promote partnerships and collaboration with key players across our footprint including Digital marketing, HR, product management, engineering, delivery, and analytics, as well as within other DCOPs to ensure that groups are aligned and engaged to deliver results, breaking silos.
  • Conceptualize and guide the teams to produce usable, consistent, and intuitive user experiences across multiple platforms and devices, making our customers' experience useful, engaging, and effective while supporting our business goals.
  • Consider markets context, industry and competitive trends, customer feedback, metrics, usability findings and technology constraints to drive your team's work in the right direction.
  • Establish and own communication channels with key stakeholders across the Bank (both within and outside of Scotia Digital) to inform and influence decisions, build relationships, and inspire confidence.
  • You will direct your teams to understand the long-term roadmaps and key wins necessary to manage priorities through performance reviews, 1-on-1 meetings, and performance and development discussions with Designers at all levels of expertise.
  • As a People Manager, you will oversee the resourcing and capacity of your team, and will be responsible for hiring, and advocating for individual team members in their careers, as well as the development of a cohesive team with a breadth of skills and experience.
  • Understand how the Bank’s risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day activities and decisions.
  • Creates an environment in which their team pursues effective and efficient operations of their respective areas in accordance with Scotiabank’s Values, its Code of Conduct and the Global Sales Principles, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational, compliance, AML/ATF/sanctions and conduct risk.
  • Builds a high performance environment and implements a people strategy that attracts, retains, develops and motivates their team by fostering an inclusive work environment and using a coaching mindset and behaviours; communicating vison/values/business strategy; and, managing succession and development planning for the team.
 

 

Education / Experience / Other Information 
  • Bachelors or master’s degree in Design, Humanities, Systems engineering or related fields (or equivalent work experience).
  • Ability to communicate concepts, ideas and strategies using rapid visual design techniques.
  • A positive and resilient personality with a growth mentality. You must be able to embrace feedback and have a desire for continuous improvement.
  • A demonstrable history of applying design thinking tenets and user centered design principles to design problems across multiple regions and languages. Driving scale and reusability.
  • A fast learner who has an appetite to uncover what’s behind both, simple and complex financial solutions.
  • 10+ years of professional experience designing responsive web and/or native mobile software applications, at least 5 of them coaching high-performance design teams in fast-paced organizations.
  • A natural storyteller with the ability to craft and communicate compelling stories that add clarity and inspire passion in our mission. A strong facilitator, with a robust tool kit of techniques to communicate and collect ideas.
  • A collaborative leader who leverages diversity across disciplines/locations/levels to fuel creativity and innovation in product design.
  • A leader that exercises flexibility and openness, with the courage to defend unpopular points of view when they add value for the customer or the business.
  • A leader with expertise on driving individual performance through feedback and modelling (recognizing strong performers and coaching under performers).
  • A leader with the commitment to get things done.
  • Studies and/or experience in complementary fields to Product Design, like visual design, animation, research, data analysis, applied arts, writing and communications, etc.
  • Experience or background in FinTechs or other financial related product fields

 

Working Conditions

  • Work in a standard office-based environment; non-standard hours are a common occurrence.
  • Limited/moderate/extensive travel internationally
