Purpose
Provides strategic direction, leadership and oversight for the Turks and Caicos Islands in District North, International Banking, ensuring business strategies, plans and initiatives are supported in compliance with governing regulations, internal policies and procedures.
Accountabilities
1. Leads and drives a customer focused culture throughout their team to deepen client relationships and leverage broader Bank relationships, systems and knowledge.
2. Leads in Setting Overall Strategic Direction of Country:
• As a key member of the Regional team, leads in setting the overall strategic direction for the country. Develops local strategies to support the overall strategy and direction of the Region and International Banking in the achievement of the business objectives.
• Building business plans that integrate the country’s unique business and regulatory environment, with plans being focused on delivering required short and long term goals.
• Influencing and involving relevant parties across the Bank in developing business plans to gain their commitment for execution.
• Managing multiple business lines by cultivating a broad internal and external network to exchange ideas focused on achieving long term business objectives.
• Maintaining a market profile within the Country, with both internal and external contacts by identifying strategic opportunities to promote Scotiabank’s business and brand.
• Assuming the role of Ambassador for Scotiabank by cultivating relationships within the Country that support Scotiabank’s strategic goals and priorities relating to growth, regulatory compliance, and corporate and social responsibility.
• Maintaining a high level of awareness on market conditions, competitor practices, economic and business trends and adhering and responding to legislative requirements and changes in the area
3. Leading Country’s Senior Management Team by:
• Leading the local management team in creating innovative and concrete business, product, customer and marketing plans and solutions that create value to our customers and drive Bank profitability and productivity.
• Leading the implementation of tactical strategies and initiatives in the Country by successfully communicating the countries vision and plans and bringing others to share it.
• Working with the local Management team on creating innovative and concrete business, product customer and marketing plans and solutions that create value to our customers and drive Bank profitability and productivity.
• Leading and driving a high standard of customer service driven culture throughout the Bank’s different business lines.
• Establishing and monitoring goals for Country by setting high performance standards and taking responsibility for achieving team results.
• Managing and adapting to the individual country’s cultural needs and differences by effectively interacting with and leading others with different backgrounds and styles.
4. Directing and Developing the implementation of a local Human Resources Strategy, which is in alignment with International Banking and Corporate goals by:
• Taking responsibility for attracting and retaining talented people and providing them with opportunities to perform and develop, promoting Scotiabank as a great place to work.
• Conducting leadership resource succession planning for key jobs and development planning for high potential employees.
• Recognizing and rewarding the contribution of others and the team.
• Promoting and maintaining a respectful working relationship between the country and head office which may possess differing work-cultures.
• Consistently showing flexibility and openness to differing ideas and solutions.
• Identifying direct reports’ strengths, weaknesses and areas for development and coach/motivate them to strive to improve. Showing commitment and working towards action on poor performers.
• Cultivating relationships within the Country that support Scotiabank’s strategic goals and priorities relating to Scotiabank’s employment brand.
5. Managing risk and maximizing shareholder value by:
• Ensuring that the development and execution of business strategies are in compliance with local government and regulatory laws.
• Ensuring that the development and execution of business strategies are in compliance with Scotiabank’s global policies and global regulatory body’s policies.
• Working closely with managers across all portfolios and activities to anticipate and mitigate credit operational, market and reputational risks. Ensures the Bank is fully compliant with ‘Know Your Customer’ (KYC) and other compliance related requirements.
• Managing towards the generation of acceptable returns.
6. Directs day-to-day activities in a manner consistent with the Bank’s risk culture and the relevant risk appetite statement and limits. Communicates the Bank’s risk culture and risk appetite statement throughout their teams.
7. Creates an environment in which his/her team pursues effective and efficient operations of his/her respective areas, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational risk, regulatory compliance risk, AML/ATF risk and conduct risk, including but not limited to responsibilities under the Operational Risk Management Framework, Regulatory Compliance Risk Management Framework, AML/ATF Global Handbook and the Guidelines for Business Conduct.
8. Builds a high performance environment and implements a people strategy that attracts, retains, develops and motivates their team by fostering an inclusive work environment; communicating vison/values/business strategy and managing succession and development planning for the team.
Requirements
- Masters in Finance or Business is highly desirable (or equivalent work experience).
- Broad knowledge of the various business lines, segments and products and thorough knowledge in sales & service design concepts and management techniques. The incumbent also requires a broad knowledge of Scotiabank’s financial services, products, segments and business lines. To complement this knowledge a thorough understanding of International Banking’s objectives, strategies and structures is required.
- Strong leadership skills are essential, along with the ability to influence and motivate others. The incumbent must possess broad general management experience and be able to set a positive example of change and encourage others to do the same, to facilitate the Bank’s strategic goals and priorities.
- Excellent credit fundamentals in Corporate or Commercial lending are desirable. The officer must be highly organized to manage conflicting priorities and a proven ability to execute. Significant experience in leading large groups of people is critical.
- A high degree of flexibility is required to adapt to a wide variety of tasks and deal well with a high level of ambiguity. The incumbent must be able to take smart and calculated risks and support others with this task.
- Strong PC skills and familiarity with word processing, spreadsheet software and planning tools are necessary as the incumbent uses a PC for a variety of communication activities.
- He/she must be able to effectively articulate their views to all levels within the Bank. Strong verbal and written communication skills are essential.
- A strong understanding of the Country’s business and political environment. A working knowledge of the products and services offered by other financial institutions operating in the Country and niche competitors is also required.
- Cultural sensitivity is extremely important and the incumbent must be able to adapt to the local market practices and ethnic culture and adjust approach accordingly to ensure successful execution in these markets.
