Contributes to the overall success of the Client Relationships in Mid-Market in a defined market area in Canada ensuring specific individual goals, plans, initiatives are executed / delivered in support of the team’s business strategies and objectives.  Ensures all activities conducted are in compliance with governing regulations, internal policies and procedures.




•    Champions a customer focused culture to deepen client relationships and leverage broader Bank relationships, systems and knowledge.


•    Promotes the development and profitable growth of the commercial banking portfolio in the assigned market area by:
o    Developing and implementing a structured marketing strategy to maximize business development opportunities for sustainable growth;
o    Developing strategic sales plans for prospects and existing customers;
o    Identifying prospects/referrals from both internal/external networks;
o    Analyzing prospect lists and prioritizing business development opportunities based industry/market data and customer analytics;
o    Partner with SCSM, who has responsibility for credit deal structuring, negotiation and pricing for credit authorizations from $5MM-$15MM;
o    Partner with internal resources for non-credit related products;
o    Referring customers and prospects to the appropriate Commercial Bank segment and partners as appropriate. 


•    Pursues an aggressive business development program within the assigned market area according to agreed-upon growth objectives by:
o    Leading the direct selling of credit and non-credit commercial products to prospects and customers;
o    Maintaining an appropriate ongoing sales pipeline and calling program;
o    Identifying and facilitating the involvement of key Bank resources and stakeholders to further business interests;
o    Maintaining effective follow-up with prospects/referrals on any unsuccessful opportunities;
o    Updating client or contact information accurately and in a timely fashion.


•    Builds and maintains a high market profile in the assigned market area with both internal and external contacts by:
o    Planning and completing relationship activities that generate sales opportunities and / or provide value to clients;
o    Building and maintaining an awareness of local market and general economic conditions;
o    Meeting with key industry and business leaders, as well as other centres of influence;
o    Participating in local professional and community events and associations to develop and expand network of contacts;
o    Liaising with Bank product specialists to stay abreast of new enhancements, products and services, and to fulfil identified client needs.


•    Ensures all aspects of assigned relationships receive ongoing attention, as required to maintain, improve, grow and retain the relationship by:
o    Promoting and encouraging a strong relationship with the SCSM and Client Solutions Analysts (CSAs);
o    Using strong knowledge of the Bank’s diverse products and services to ensure the banking needs of each relationship are well understood and documented.
o    Actively seeking customer feedback on Bank products and services and the delivery of customer service;
o    Liaising with the Shared Services Business Support Centre (BSC) for fulfilment (including documentation, liaison with 3rd parties, security registration), compliance monitoring, reporting actions and all service activities as required;
o    Leading the direct selling of credit and non-credit products and partnering with all internal product specialist groups as required ensuring customer needs are met.


•    Safeguards the Bank’s assets and liabilities by:
o    Ensuring any support from the BSC on fulfillment, client portfolio monitoring and servicing is completed;
o    Ensuring early identification of problem loans and ensuring the accuracy of risk ratings through identification of changes in account quality via review of industry/economic trends;
o    Making recommendations relative to structure, monitoring and risk rating to Global Risk Management as issues are identified.  This may include exiting a relationship;
o    Directing and assisting Client Solutions Analysts in the evaluation of all information received and reporting deficiencies or any negative findings to senior management including RA, and final risk rating assessment
o    Maintaining adherence to the Bank’s Anti-Money Laundering program, Know Your Customer requirements and Guidelines for Business Conduct, by reporting any unusual occurrences or fraudulent activities as per established procedures.


•    Manage an assigned credit portfolio up to $15MM in authorizations at an acceptable level of risk, with accountability for underwriting authorizations from $3MM-$5MM by:
o    Completing credit reviews in a timely and sufficiently detailed fashion
o    Authorizing, renewing or declining customer requests within standard Bank policies and authorized limits, forwarding others as per established processes.
o    Preparing and/or ensuring all documentation is properly prepared
o    Ensuring accounts adhere to the conditions of authorization
o    Identifying and resolving deviations from the conditions of authorization
o    Partnering with the SCSM to obtain guidance on structuring more difficult or complicated credit applications within these authorization limits


•    Understand how the Bank’s risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day activities and decisions.


•    Actively pursues effective and efficient operations of his/her respective areas in accordance with Scotiabank’s Values, its Code of Conduct and the Global Sales Principles, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational, compliance, AML/ATF/sanctions and conduct risk.

The incumbent manages a client portfolio of moderate to higher complexity, with business development activities that target clients with credit authorizations from $3MM-$25MM and/or client annual sales from $15MM-$75MM (minimum target account loading of 30 borrowing relationships). 


The incumbent is responsible for analysis and completion of credit applications up to $5MM for diverse industry segments, with key emphasis placed on profitability to the Bank.  The incumbent is also on the coverage team with the SCSM for clients with credit authorizations from $5MM-$15MM, and partners closely on deal structuring, negotiation and pricing for new and existing customers in this segment.



Education / Experience / Other Information

Complexity of Position:

•    The incumbent must have at least 2 to 5 years of commercial banking experience.  They require a strong knowledge of the commercial banking marketplace in Canada and a detailed knowledge of the assigned market area’s key prospects, major companies and competitive positioning within the assigned market area. The incumbent must also have a strong understanding of the Commercial Bank’s objectives, strategies and structure, as well as its lending and deposit products and services.

•    The incumbent must possess intermediate credit skills and an understanding of financial analysis, risk analysis techniques, credit adjudication and the Bank’s lending policies/procedures.

•    Very strong interpersonal skills and communication skills are essential to this position.  The incumbent must be able to effectively articulate views both within the Bank and externally in the marketplace.

•    Strong PC skills are necessary, including a working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and all commercial systems and platforms.

External education and/or licensing prerequisites: undergraduate degree in business or economics or work equivalency. Other training requirements as determined by the Bank from time to time.

Working Conditions
•    The incumbent works in a standard office environment.  Normal sensory attention is required.  The incumbent is required to travel within their assigned geography in order to execute on sales calling program.  Frequent interruptions, ad hoc requests and unplanned operating issues, along with constantly changing priorities contribute to the high demands placed on the incumbent.  Non-standard working hours are a regular occurrence.
